Box Score 2 Loretto, Pa. (April 24, 2016)—Mount St. Mary's dropped both ends of a Northeast Conference doubleheader at league-leading Saint Francis U on Sunday. After falling in the opening game, 8-0, the Mount was edged in the nightcap, 9-8.
In the opening game, Saint Francis pitcher Ketarah DeVries held the Mount to two hits in the 8-0 victory. The Red Flash (29-18, 9-1 NEC) took the lead on a Madison Cabell home run in the second, and added two-run homers from Sierra McKee and Jordan Seneca in the third to take a 5-0 advantage.
Marisa Mayes and Rachel Heinze each went 1-for-2 at the plate for the Mount in the game.
The Mountaineers raced to a 6-0 and 8-2 lead in the second game, before the Red Flash rallied for the win.
Mayes led off the second game with a home run to give the Mount an early 1-0 lead. The Mount (12-32, 3-9 NEC) then scored five times in the top of the second to grab a six-run advantage. Rachel Gavigan and Marian Ruf led off the inning with base hits. After a flyout and an Emilee Kirk sacrifice bunt, Mayes doubled to center field to plate both runners for a 3-0 lead. Jessica Greenewald singled, and Rachel Heinze was walked intentionally to load the bases. Lindsay Heinze then walked to force home Mayes for the Mount's fourth run. Holly Buckel followed with a two-run single to center to make it 6-0.
The Red Flash got a pair of runs back in the third on a Hayley Norton two-run homer. The Mountaineers responded in the top of the fourth when Rachel Heinze was hit by a pitch, and Lindsay Heinze then drilled a two-run homer to give the Mount an 8-2 advantage.
Saint Francis chipped away at the lead with single runs in the fourth and fifth to cut the gap to 8-4. The Red Flash loaded the bases in the sixth on a single, an error and a walk, and Cabell came through for Saint Francis with a grand slam to tie the score. Kassidy Troxell then gave Saint Francis the lead with a solo home run.
DeVries retired the Mount in order in the seventh to earn the win.
Mayes went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and three RBI to pace the Mount in game two. Greenewald also went 2-for-4 at the plate in the game.
The Mountaineers are back in action on Tuesday with a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader at Delaware.
