Box Score 2 STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (April 23, 2016) – Mount St. Mary's University baseball held Wagner to just one run in a doubleheader on Saturday to extend its winning streak to four straight games. The Mountaineers notched a 3-0 win in the opening game before topping the Seahawks by a 2-1 margin in extra innings in game two to secure the sweep.
GAME ONE: Mount St. Mary's 3, Wagner 0
Austin Bonadio, Seth Schubert and Michael Kuypers combined for a seven inning shutout as Mount St. Mary's topped Wagner, 3-0, in the first game of the doubleheader. Bonadio was credited with the win, tossing three scoreless innings with three strikeouts, while Kuypers picked up the save as he held Wagner hitless in two innings of work.
The Mount scored single runs in the first and second innings to take an early 2-0 advantage. Vaughn Parker II drove in the first run of the contest with an RBI groundout, and the Mountaineers tacked on another in the following inning on an error by Wagner shortstop Nick Mascelli.
In the top of the sixth, Zach Hostetter worked a leadoff walk and Patrick Causa and Chris Wessels followed with singles to load the bases with nobody out. The next batter, Zach Call, was hit by a pitch to push pinch runner Tanner Sampson across and give the Mount a 3-0 lead. Nick Abbatiello was able to work out of the jam, getting a strikeout and lineout double play to prevent further damage.
Kuypers came on to pitch for the Mount and shut the door with a pair of scoreless innings as he registered his third save of the season.
Ryan Owens picked up another multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a run scored, and Hostetter, Causa, Wessels and Alex Kriss chipped in with one hit apiece.
GAME TWO: Mount St. Mary's 2, Wagner 1 (12 innings)
Alex Kriss' fourth hit of the contest, a single up the middle in the top of the 12th inning, drove in Mitch Sgrignoli for the go-ahead run, and Josh Little closed out the bottom half of frame in 1-2-3 fashion as Mount St. Mary's grabbed a 2-1 win in extras to complete the doubleheader sweep.
Connor Graber got the start on the mound for Mount St. Mary's, going 6.1 innings while allowing no earned runs on six hits. Chad Diehl (0.2 IP), Ben Smallenbroek (3.0) and Josh Little (2.0) combined for 5.2 innings of scoreless relief. Little, who didn't allow a baserunner in his two innings, was credited with his first career victory.
Kriss collected a career-high four knocks, finishing 4-for-6 with a run scored and one RBI to lead the Mount's offense. Zach Hostetter registered the team's other RBI in the game with a run-scoring single to left in the first inning.
