Box Score 2 Emmitsburg, Md. (April 23, 2016)--The Mount St. Mary's softball team dropped both games of a Northeast Conference doubleheader to LIU Brooklyn at Our Lady of the Meadows Field this afternoon. Rachel Heinze went 4-for-6 at the plate to pace the Mount in the twinbill. The Blackbirds won the opener, 5-1, before taking the second game, 11-2, in six innings.
LIU Brooklyn (20-24, 8-2 NEC) scored a run in the top of the first while adding three more in the third to take a 4-0 lead in the opening game. Celinna Cosio drove in all four runs with a sacrifice fly in the first, and a three-run homer to right field in the third.
The Mountaineers (12-30, 3-7 NEC) got a run back in the bottom of the fourth. Heinze singled through the left side and moved to second on a Holly Buckel base hit. Rachel Gavigan then doubled to center field to score Heinze with the Mount's first run. LIU pitcher Erynn Sobieski was able to get out of the inning with a pair of groundouts.
LIU's Ariana Lopez hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth to give LIU a 5-1 lead. The Mount threatened in the bottom of the sixth when Rachel Heinze singled and Lindsay Heinze walked to put runners on first and second with no outs. The runners moved up on a ground out. Gavigan followed by hitting a hard-hit ball off the pitcher's glove. The ball bounced to the third baseman, who threw out Heinze at home.
Heinze went 3-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored for the Mount while Buckel went 2-for-3 in the game. Marian Ruf started, allowing five runs in four innings of work. Katie Olson pitched three innings of scoreless relief.
In the second game, LIU scored six times in the top of the first en route to an 11-2 victory. The Mount scored twice in the bottom of the sixth on a Gavigan RBI double and a Ruf run-scoring single.
Lindsay Heinze went 2-for-2 at the plate to pace the Mount in game two.
The Mount is back in action tomorrow with an NEC twinbill at Saint Francis U.
