Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (April 23, 2016)--Frankie McCarthy (Swarthmore, Pa.) made 11 saves as the Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse team posted a 7-3 win over Wagner on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium on campus. Spencer Smith (Scottsdale, Ariz.) led the offense with a pair of goals.
After Wagner's Billy Battaglia opened the scoring just over two minutes into the game, the Mount (6-7, 2-3 NEC) got on the scoreboard when Mark Hojnoski (West Springfield, Mass.) dodged past a defender and buried a shot to tie the game at 1-1.
The score remained tied until late in the first half when defenseman Kevin Verkler (Libertyville, Ill.) scored his first career goal on a pass from Mike Pascali (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.). Pascali found Verkler open breaking down the middle in front of the goal.
The Mount scored a pair of goals in a span of 32 seconds early in the third quarter to push the lead to 4-1. Ryan Lamon (Severna Park, Md.) notched the first goal of the run 2:27 into the third quarter, and Mikey Ripa (Clifton, Va.) notched hs first goal of the season on a pass from Hojnoski 32 seconds later.
Wagner's Patrick McMenamin cut the Mount advantage to 4-2, but consecutive goals from Smith and Jack Mangan (Bayville, N.Y.) gave the Mount a four-goal lead with 12:30 left in the game. Wagner's Spencer Kaufman cut the Mount lead to 6-3, but Smith closed out the scoring with his ninth goal of the season with 1:28 left in the game. Matty Yates (Solomons Island, Md.) picked up an assist on the play.
The Mount held a 43-25 advantage in shots with a 37-23 edge in ground balls. The Mount won 9-of-14 face-offs in the game as well.
Smith finished with a pair of goals in the win while Hojnoski increased his team-leading point total to 40 with a goal and an assist. Pascali chipped in a pair of assist for the Mount as well. Mike Celmer (Toms River, N.J.) won 9-of-14 face-offs while he and Brent Tsang (Mercer Island, Wash.) each picked up a team-high six ground balls.
Mount St. Mary's travels to Saint Joseph's on Saturday, April 30, for a 1:00 p.m. matchup to close out the regular season.
