Box Score 2 New Britain, Conn. (April 16, 2016)—The Mount St. Mary's softball team dropped both ends of a Northeast Conference doubleheader at Central Connecticut State on Saturday afternoon. The Mount fell, 7-2, in game one before dropping game two, 6-1. Shea McFarland went 4-for-7 in the twinbill.
GM 1: Central Connecticut 7, Mount St. Mary's 2
Central Connecticut scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to break a 2-2 tie en route to a 7-2 win in the opening game of the doubleheader. The Mount had four players with two hits in the game.
The Mountaineers took the lead in the top of the fourth when Marian Ruf doubled, and pinch-runner Sam Lichtner scored on Rachel Gavigan's RBI single.
The Blue Devils answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning when Kerri Dadalski hit a two-out, two-run double to left center. The Mount evened the scored in the next frame when a Shea McFarland singled knocked in Holly Buckel.
CCSU regained the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Kaitlyn Paterson led off with a double, moved to third on an error, and scored on a sacrifice fly. Brittany Camara then doubled to push the lead to 4-2. The Blue Devils scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to seal the win.
Gavigan went 2-for-2 for the Mount in the loss, while Marisa Mayes, Buckel and McFarland each went 2-for-4. Lichtner took the loss, allowing seven runs (just two earned) with five strikeouts in six innings.
GM 2: Central Connecticut 6, Mount St. Mary's 1
Central Connecticut completed the sweep with a 6-1 victory in game two of the twinbill. McFarland went 2-for-3 at the plate in the loss.
After CCSU took a 1-0 lead in the first, the Mount tied the game in the top of the third. Mayes singled, and moved to second when Rachel Heinze was hit by a pitch. Lindsay Heinze then followed with a base hit to even the score.
Central Connecticut regained the lead in the bottom of the third on an Alexis DeBrosse RBI triple. The Blue Devils scored four times in the bottom of the fifth to secure the win. Dadalski's bases loaded triple was the big hit in the inning.
Ruf started for the Mount, allowing six runs in the complete-game effort.
The Mount will play another NEC doubleheader at Bryant at noon tomorrow.
