Box Score 2 Emmitsburg, Md. (April 10, 2016)--Cousins Rachel Heinze (Charlotte Hall, Md.) and Lindsay Heinze (Charlotte Hall, Md.) powered Mount St. Mary's to a sweep of visiting Sacred Heart on Sunday afternoon at Our Lady of the Meadows Field on campus.
Rachel Heinze blasted a walk-off three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Mount to an 8-7 win in the opening game of the doubleheader. In the nightcap, Lindsay Heinze's grand slam propelled the Mountaineers to a 7-4 victory. The pair combined to go 6-for-11 with three home runs and 11 RBI in the two games.
GAME 1: Mount St. Mary's 8, Sacred Heart 7
Trailing 7-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Rachel Heinze belted a three-run walk-off home run to lift the Mountaineers to an 8-7 victory in the opening game of the twinbill.
Jessica Greenewald started the rally by lacing a single to left-center field. Marisa Mayes walked to put runners on first and second for Rachel Heinze, who delivered by launching a high-arcing homer over the left field fence to give the Mount the walk-off win. It was Heinze's 15th home run of the season, placing her one shy of the Northeast Conference single-season record of 16 set by Andrea Lazzari of Wagner in 2009.
Sacred Heart (9-21, 1-3 NEC) took the early lead in the game, scoring a pair of runs in each of the first two innings for a 4-0 advantage. Hailey Desrosiers provided the big hit for the Pioneers, a two-run homer in the top of the second inning.
The Mountaineers (8-24, 2-2 NEC) fought back, scoring five times in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead. With Rachel Gavigan on second and two outs, Mayes delivered a run-scoring single to center field to put the Mount on the scoreboard. Rachel Heinze walked to put runners on first and second to set the table for Lindsay Heinze, who hit a three-run homer to left to tie the game. Holly Buckel followed by lacing a solo homer to straight-away center field to give the Mount a 5-4 advantage. It was Buckel's fifth home run of the season.
Sacred Heart responded, scoring three times in the top of the sixth to take the lead. Lauren Delgadillo's two-out solo home run tied the score, and Stephanie Appelberg's two-run double to the gap in left center field gave Sacred Heart a 7-5 advantage.
Rachel Heinze went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, and three RBI in the victory while Mayes was 1-for-2 with a pair of runs scored. Sam Lichtner earned the win, striking out seven in a complete-game effort.
GAME 2: Mount St. Mary's 7, Sacred Heart 4
Lindsay Heinze blasted a grand slam in the bottom of the third to snap a 2-2 tie and propel the Mountaineers to a 7-4 victory in the second game.
Sacred Heart scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead, but the Mount responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame to tie the score. Mayes doubled off the top of the right field fence to start the rally. Rachel Heinze put runners on second and third when she laced a double to right-center. Lindsay Heinze got the Mount on the scoreboard when her flare to right fell in for an RBI single. Buckel then laid down a perfect squeeze but to score Rachel Heinze with the tying run.
In the bottom of the third, the Mount loaded the bases when Greenewald was hit by a pitch, Mayes walked, and Rachel Heinze was hit by a pitch. Lindsay Heinze then came through with the big hit, belting a grand slam to center field to put the Mountaineers ahead, 6-2. Rachel Gavigan's line-drive solo homer in the bottom of the fourth stretched the lead to 7-2.
The Pioneers rallied with a run in the top of the sixth to cut the Mount lead to 7-3. In the seventh, Sacred Heart loaded the bases, and cut the Mount advantage to 7-4 when Delgadillo walked. The Mount was able to escape the jam when Desrosiers hit a hard grounder to Mount third baseman Emilee Kirk, who raced to the bag at third for the final out.
Lindsay Heinze went 2-for-3 with a homer and five RBI to pace the Mount in game two. Rachel Heinze and Mayes each went 1-for-2 with a pair of runs scored. Marian Ruf earned the win, allowing three runs (one earned) in five-plus innings. Katie Olson picked up her first collegiate save, allowing an unearned run in two innings of work.
The Mount is back in action on Tuesday, April 12, with a home doubleheader against Howard at 3:00 p.m.
