Mount St. Mary's Softball Falls to BYU in Opening Game of Wildcat Invitational

Tucson, Ariz. (March 3, 2016)--The Mount St. Mary's softball team opened the Wildcat Invitational with a 15-6 loss to BYU on Thursday night.

The Mount (0-10) jumped to a 1-0 lead when Marian Ruf walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning.  BYU countered with six runs in the top of the second to take the lead.

Mount St. Mary's answered, scoring three times in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to 6-4.  Marisa Mayes doubles, Jessica Greenewald reached on an error, and Megan Baker singled to load the bases.  Lindsay Heinze then cleared the bases with a double to cut the BYU lead to two.

The Cougars (10-6) scored five runs in the top of the third to stretch the lead to 11-4.  In the bottom of the third, Ruf singled and came around to score on a Holly Buckel infield single, and a BYU error.

After BYU scored four in the top of the sixth, Rachel Heinze hit her second home run of the year, a solo shot, in the bottom of the inning.

The Mount plays No. 10 James Madison and No. 15 Arizona today.
