Box Score Towson, Md. (March 30, 2016) – Mount St. Mary's baseball came back from a five-run deficit, scoring three times in the seventh and twice in the eighth, but fell to Towson, 8-7, on a walk-off home run by John Drexel in the bottom of the ninth. Freshman Dennis Stewart went 2-for-3 with his first career homer for the Mount.
The Tigers took a 3-0 lead into the fifth inning before Stewart belted a two-run homer to left center to cut the Mountaineers' deficit to 3-2. The homer was Stewart's first of his collegiate career in just his 10th at-bat.
Towson responded with three runs in the bottom half of the fifth and one in the sixth to extend its lead to 7-2. Brady Policelli knocked a two-run homer to left center to highlight the Tigers' fifth inning.
Mount St. Mary's began its comeback with three runs in the seventh as Tommy Quealy hit an RBI double down the right field line and Alex Kriss collected a pair of RBI on a single to left as the Mount trimmed its deficit to 7-5. In the next inning, Zach Call worked an RBI walk and Chris Wessels reached on a fielder's choice to push across the tying run.
Drexel got the call to pinch hit in the ninth and worked the count full before hitting a homer to left field as the Tigers walked off with the 8-7 victory.
Stewart (2-for-3) and Michael Flyte (2-for-4) collected multi-hit games to lead the Mountaineer offense. Stewart and Alex Kriss each registered a pair of RBI, while Quealy, Call and Wessels knocked in a run apiece.
Policelli drove in four runs, going 3-for-4, and Colin Dyer posted two RBI to lead the Towson offense.
Kyle Stricker picked up the win, going 1.2 scoreless, while Michael Kuypers took the loss for the Mount despite yielding just one run in three innings. Chad Diehl got the start for Mount St. Mary's, striking out six in four innings of work.
Mount St. Mary's heads to UMBC for a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 2, beginning at 1 p.m.
