Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (March 26, 2016)--The Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse team fell to Robert Morris, 11-9, on Saturday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium on campus. Justin Gosnell and Mark Hojnoski each had two goals and an assist in the loss.
In a wild first quarter, the teams combined for 11 goals with the Mount holding a 6-5 lead after the first 15 minutes of play.
Ryan Lamon and Hojnoski gave the Mount a 2-0 advantage just 2:24 into the game. The scoring continued with the teams exchanging goals over the next eight minutes. After Robert Morris' Luke Laskiewicz scored, Mike Pascali converted a transition opportunity for his second goal of the season to make it 3-1.
Laskiewicz countered again, but the Mount's Chris DiPretoro posted his 11th goal of the season to give the Mount a 4-2 lead with 6:49 left in the first quarter. Laskiewicz cut the deficit to one with his third goal of the game, but Gosnell pushed the lead back to two with his first goal of the game with 4:49 left in the opening quarter.
The Colonials (4-5, 2-0 NEC) scored the next two goals to tie the score. Hojnoski tallied his second goal of the game with 1.1 seconds left in the first quarter to give the Mountaineers a 6-5 lead.
Robert Morris was able to take control of the momentum of the game by scoring the first three goals of the second quarter to take an 8-6 lead. Laskiewicz started the run with his fourth goal of the half to tie the score. Eric Rankel and Eric Wales then scored 34 seconds apart to push the Robert Morris lead to two with 9:07 left in the first half. The Mount's Bubba Johnson cut the deficit in half when he buried a shot on a pass from DiPretoro to make it 8-7.
Johnson tied the game at 8-8 early in the third quarter with his seventh goal of the season. The Colonials grabbed the lead back when James Rahe scored a man-up goal with 3:25 left in the third.
In the fourth quarter, Robert Morris was able to extend the lead to 11-8 on goals by Eddie Smith and Alexander Bohl. The Mount's Gosnell cut the gap to 11-9 with 2:56 left, but the Mountaineers were not able to complete the comeback.
Gosnell and Hojnoski each had two goals and an assist for the Mount in the game while Johnson added a pair of goals. DiPretoro added a goal and two assists, Lamon had a goal and an assist, and Jack Mangan two helpers in the loss.
Laskiewicz led Robert Morris with four goals and three assists while Rahe chipped in a pair of goals. Alex Heger played the final three quarters in goal for the Colonials, allowing three goals while making 12 saves.
Matt Vierheller made seven saves for the Mount with Mike Celmer winning 12-of-24 face-offs while adding a team-high seven ground balls. The Mount forced Robert Morris into 20 turnovers, but the Colonials had a 38-to-27 edge in ground balls in the contest.
The Mount is back in action on Saturday, April 2, with a 7:00 p.m. NEC matchup at Sacred Heart.
