Box Score 2 Emmitsburg, Md. (March 24, 2016)--Junior Rachel Heinze belted three home runs to power Mount St. Mary's to a doubleheader sweep of visiting Morgan State on Thursday afternoon at Our Lady of the Meadows Field on campus. Heinze also matched the Mount's single-season home run record with her third home run of the day.
Heinze went 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI to lead the Mount to a 6-3 victory in the opening game of the twinbill. She added a solo home run in the second game, while Shea McFarland provided the heroics with a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh in the Mount's 2-1 win in game two.
Game One: Mount St. Mary's 6, Morgan State 3
In the opening game, Heinze went 3-for-4 with two home runs, three RBI and three runs scored in leading the Mountaineers to the 6-3 victory.
After the Bears (5-18) scored on a passed ball in the top of the first, Heinze hit a two-run homer to left in the bottom of the frame to give the Mount a 2-1 lead. Holly Buckel led off the bottom of the second with a solo shot to center field to extend the Mount's advantage to 3-1.
Rachel Heinze then hit a towering home run over the scoreboard in left field to lead off the bottom of the fifth to push the lead to 4-1. The Mount added another run in the inning on Sam Lichtner's line drive single off the shortstop's glove.
In the sixth, Rachel Heinze singled with two outs, and moved to third on Lindsay Heinze's base hit. Rachel came home to score on a double steal to make the score 6-1.
The Bears scored twice in the top of the seventh on a Korynna Lara double to close out the scoring.
In addition to Heinze's three-hit game, Buckel finished 2-for-3 in the victory. Katie Olson earned the win, allowing an unearned run in five innings to improve to 2-3 on the season. Lichtner struck out three over the final two innings to close out the game.
Game Two: Mount St. Mary's 2, Morgan State 1
Shea McFarland's walk-off RBI single to left field scored Emilee Kirk with the winning run in the Mount's 2-1 victory in the second game of the doubleheader.
Rachel Heinze opened the scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. It was her third home run of the day, and her 11th home run of the season, matching Liz Christiansen's single-season record set in 2010.
The Bears knotted the score in the top of the fifth. Kimber Salvas reached on an error, stole second, and moved to third on a groundout to the pitcher. Stormy Zyzak followed with a ground ball to short. Mount first baseman Rachel Gavigan came off the bag at first to try and get the runner out at home, but her throw was a bit late, and the Bears were able to tie the game.
With the score tied 1-1 heading to the bottom of the seventh, the Mount came through with a pair of two-out singles to earn the win. Kirk led off the inning when she legged out an infield single to short. After a strikeout and a Buckel sacrifice bunt, Marisa Mayes looped a single to left field to put runners on the corners. McFarland followed with a base hit to left to plate Kirk with the winning run.
Mayes, McFarland, Rachel Heinze and Rachel Gavigan each had two hits in the victory. Marian Ruf earned the complete-game win, allowing an unearned run with five strikeouts.
The Mountaineers are back in action on Tuesday, March 29, when the host Brown for a doubleheader at 2:00 p.m. at Our Lady of the Meadows Field on campus.
