Mount Softball Drops Pair at Towson Tiger Invitational

Towson, Md. (March 18, 2016)—The Mount St. Mary's softball team lost a pair of games on Friday at the Towson Tiger Invitational.

The Mountaineers fell to Towson, 10-4, in their opening game of the day.  Rachel Heinze and Holly Buckel each hit two-run homers for the Mount in the game.

The Tigers (18-5) scored a pair of runs in the first and one more in the third to take a 3-0 lead.  The Mount fought back in the top of the fourth.  Shea McFarland singled with one out and Heinze connected for her team-leading sixth home run to make it 3-2.

Towson answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Mount responded in the top of the fifth on Buckel's two-run homer to cut the deficit to 7-4.  Towson sealed the win with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Erin Sweeney pitched a complete game for the Mount.

Fordham 13, Mount St. Mary's 5

Rachel Gavigan and Shea McFarland each homered, but the Mountaineers fell to Fordham, 13-5, in the second game on Friday.

After Fordham (14-13) scored three times in the bottom of the first to take the lead, the Mount rallied for four runs in the top half of the second.  Buckel singled and Gavigan followed with a two-run homer to make it 3-2.  Emilee Kirk doubled, and Shea McFarland's two-run shot gave the Mount the lead.

The Mount added to the lead in the top of the third when Marian Ruf singled, Buckel doubled, and Gavigan drove in Ruf with a sacrifice fly.

Fordham took control of the game by scoring five times in the bottom of the third and four more in the fourth for a 12-5 advantage.

The Mount is back in action tomorrow against Fordham at 11 a.m. and Villanova at 3:30 p.m.  Sunday's games at the Towson Tiger Invitational have been cancelled.
