Box Score 2 Baltimore, Md. (March 12, 2016)—The Mount St. Mary's University softball team broke into the win column with a doubleheader sweep at Coppin State on Saturday afternoon. The Mount won the opening game, 10-2, in six innings, before taking game two, 8-3.
GAME 1: Mount St. Mary's 10, Coppin State 2 (6 innings)
The Mount jumped out to a 6-0 lead en route to a 10-2 win over Coppin State in six innings in the opening game of the doubleheader.
Rachel Gavigan's walk with the bases loaded in the top of the first opened the scoring in the game. Marisa Mayes tripled to open the second and she came home on a Jessica Greenewald base hit. After a fielder's choice, Rachel Heinze doubled home Shea McFarland to put the Mount ahead, 3-0.
The Mountaineers added three runs in the top of the fourth to take a 6-0 lead. The first run scored on a Coppin State error, and Heinze then belted a long home run to give the Mount six-run cushion.
The Eagles got a run back in the fourth on an Alanna Williams home run, but the Mount responded by scoring the next four runs for a commanding 10-1 lead. Greenewald's RBI single in the fifth made it 7-1. Lindsay Heinze had an RBI single, Mayes an RBI groundout, and Holly Buckel an RBI single in the sixth to break the game open.
Rachel Heinze went 3-for-3 with a double, a home run and three RBI to lead the Mount offense in game one. Greenewald was 2-for-4 with two RBI, McFarland 2-for-5 with three runs scored, Lindsay Heinze 2-for-4 and Marian Ruf 2-for-4 in the victory.
Katie Olson earned the win, striking out five while allowing two run in the complete game.
GAME 2: Mount St. Mary's 8, Coppin State 3
The Mountaineers scored five times in the top of the fifth inning to secure an 8-3 win in the second game of the doubleheader. Marian Ruf went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI to pace the offense.
The Eagles scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead. The Mount answered in the second when Rachel Gavigan walked, and Ruf followed with a two-run home to tie the score.
A Mount error in the bottom of the second allowed Coppin State to regain the lead, 3-2. The score remained that way until the top of the fifth, when the Mount scored five times to take the lead.
Holly Buckel and Jessica Greenewald each singled to put runners on first and third with one out. Shea McFarland then singled to bring home Buckel with the tying run. Lindsay Heinze's RBI single gave the Mount the lead, and Ruf followed with a two-run double for a three-run advantage. Mayes followed with a single to plate Heinze to make the score 7-3. McFarland's sacrifice fly in the sixth rounded out the scoring.
Greenewald was 2-for-3 at the plate in the win while Mayes added a pair of hits as well. Buckel was 1-for-2 with two runs scored.
Samantha Lichtner earned the win, tossing five scoreless innings of relief, striking out three. Erin Sweeney started, allowing three runs (two earned) in the game.
The Mount is back in action at the UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational tomorrow against Marist at noon and UMBC at 4:30 p.m.
