Box Score Jacksonville, Fla. (February 28, 2016) – Starter Chad Diehl allowed just one earned run in 3.2 innings, and Brendan Dabagian, Zach Hostetter and Ryan Owens each collected multi-hit games, but Mount St. Mary's University baseball dropped its series finale at Jacksonville, 14-3, on Sunday afternoon.
Diehl went 3.2 innings, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out one in his first start of the season. The lefty surrendered five runs, but just one of those was earned. Closer Jordan Lawson made his first appearance of the season, going three strong with three strikeouts and one earned run.
Dabagian went 2-for-3 in the contest with a run scored, Hostetter collected his second multi-hit game of the series with a 2-for-4 performance, including a triple and a run scored, and Owens finished 2-for-5 with an RBI to lead the Mount's offense.
After a groundout to lead off the bottom of the fourth for Jacksonville, Sam Armstrong reached on an error and scored on a double to left center by Franco Guardascione. Later in the inning with two outs, Angel Camacho hit an RBI double and Dakota Julylia followed with another double to drive in Camacho as the Dolphins put up a four unearned runs in the frame.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Dolphins added eight more runs on five hits to extend its lead to 13-0. Armstrong picked up a pair of RBI in the inning to lead the offensive attack.
Mount St. Mary's fought back, scoring runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. With two outs and nobody on in the top of the sixth, Patrick Causa walked and advanced to third on a Hostetter single. Pat Daly followed with a single to knock in Causa for his first RBI of the season.
The Mount added a run in the seventh as Owens singled to right field to score Dabagian, and followed with another in the eighth as a Joshua Lenig RBI groundout trimmed the Mountaineers' deficit further.
Mike Cassala pitched a scoreless ninth inning to close out the 14-3 victory for Jacksonville.
Mount St. Mary's heads to Wake Forest to take on the Demon Deacons this Wednesday (March 2) at 4 p.m.
