GAME NOTES
MOUNT STORYLINES
· The Mountaineers nearly pulled off a 14-point comeback on Saturday at Loyola, but eventually fell to the Greyhounds by a 58-53 margin. Mikal Johnson led the way with a team-high 15 points, while Katrice Dickson and Alexis Carter chipped in with 12 points apiece. Carter pulled down a season-high eight rebounds, and fellow senior Kathleen Belanger-Finn added a career-high six assists.
· Mikal Johnson was named the College Sports Madness NEC Player of the Week on Monday following standout performances against Coppin State and Loyola. She combined for 29 points in the pair of games, and led the Mount to a 54-48 win over Coppin State with 14 points, seven rebounds and a pair of assists.
· The Mountaineer defense has followed up a stellar 2015-16 season with some early success in the first seven games of the 2016-17 campaign. The Mount currently ranks second in the Northeast Conference in field goal percentage defense, allowing just 38.6-percent shooting by opponents. This comes on the heels of last season in which the Mountaineers placed second in the league in scoring defense, as they allowed just 61.9 points per game.
· The Mount owns a 248-136 all-time record at Knott Arena, including an 88-57 mark in Northeast Conference games. The Mountaineers have registered double-digit wins at home in 11 different seasons, including two under Head Coach Bryan Whitten.
· Caroline Hummell has now recorded double-digit points in five games this season after reaching double figures just once in her previous two seasons combined. The junior tallied career highs in points (28), rebounds (14), field goals (8), three-pointers (3) and free throws (9) in the team's first win of the season against Morgan State.
SCOUTING MARYLAND EASTERN SHORE
The Hawks sit at 3-3 on the year with victories against Cheyney (75-38), UMBC (70-57) and UNC Greensboro (60-53). Ciani Byrom leads the squad with 14.8 points a game and 5.7 assists per contest. Keyera Eaton and Mariah McCoy rank second and third on the team in scoring, respectively, averaging just under 10 points per game apiece.
INSIDE THE SERIES
The Mount and MDES are set to meet for the 15th time in series history on Wednesday. The Mount owns a 13-1 advantage, including a perfect 7-0 mark on its home court in Emmitsburg. Last season, the Mountaineers posted a 57-50 victory at MDES behind 29 points combined from Alexis Carter and Kathleen Belanger-Finn.
