MOUNT UPDATE: The Mount St. Mary's University softball team wraps up the 2015 season with a doubleheader at Sacred Heart on Saturday. The games were originally scheduled for April 3, but were postponed due to rain. Looking for a sweep of the Pioneers for the third season in a row, the young Mountaineers are led by four underclassmen who are hitting .279 or better. Sophomore Tori Belloc leads the offense with a .298 average.
LAST TIME OUT: The Mount suffered two losses in a road doubleheader at Towson on Wednesday afternoon at Tiger Softball Stadium. The Mountaineers dropped game one, 8-0, and fell by a 6-1 score in game two. Freshman Niki Gonzalez hit her fifth home run of the season in game two to lead the Mount, while Towson picked up 20 hits on the day en route to a pair of victories.
SEASON FINALE: Seniors Casey Beck, Danni Cummings, Maria Santiago, Hayley Stankan and Rachel Teti will all don the Blue and White for the final time as Saturday's doubleheader marks the end of their Mount St. Mary's careers. The group has won 62 games in four seasons and helped the Mount to 25 Northeast Conference wins.
ABOUT SACRED HEART: Competing for the final time this season on Saturday, the Pioneers are coming off a split in Wednesday's doubleheader at Army. At the plate, Justine Sibthorp leads Sacred Heart with a .289 batting average and is tied for the team lead with four home runs. The Pioneers' No. 1 pitcher, Jamie Carlson, is 8-12 on the year with a 2.72 ERA.
LAST SEASON VS. SACRED HEART: Last season's doubleheader sweep of Sacred Heart was highlighted by Nicole Pagano's game one no-hitter to break the Mount's career wins record. The Mountaineers won game one, 2-0, and completed the sweep on Rachel Heinze's walk-off single in game two in a 1-0 victory.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. SACRED HEART: Mount St. Mary's has won the last four meetings with Sacred Heart to improve to 12-21 in the all-time series. The four-game winning streak for the Mount over the Pioneers came after dropping seven in a row in the series from 2010-2012. The Mountaineers are 4-8 in road contests in Fairfield, Conn.
