Box Score 2 Towson, Md. (April 29, 2015) – The Mount St. Mary's University softball team suffered two losses in a road doubleheader at Towson on Wednesday afternoon at Tiger Softball Stadium. The Mountaineers dropped game one, 8-0, and fell by a 6-1 score in game two.
Freshman Niki Gonzalez (Tucson, Ariz.) hit her fifth home run of the season in game two to lead the Mount (10-32), while Towson (33-19) picked up 20 hits on the day en route to a pair of victories.
GAME ONE: Towson 8 – Mount St. Mary's 0 (5 Innings)
Towson pitcher Missy McCormick tossed a one-hit shutout with nine strikeouts in five innings to help the Tigers earn an 8-0 win in game one. McCormick also helped her own cause with a pair of RBIs.
At the dish, the Tigers registered 10 hits and scored in all five innings. Towson picked up single runs in the first and second innings before adding three in the bottom of the third. Olivia Baltazar knocked in two runs in the third on a double as part of a 2-for-3 game.
McCormick added her second RBI of the game with a single in the fourth, and the Tigers put the game away with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to pick up their seventh and eighth runs of the game.
Freshman pitcher Marian Ruf (Mesa, Ariz.) struck out three batters and gave up four earned runs on five hits in 2.2 innings of work to take the loss for the Mount. In relief, Sam Lichtner (Morgantown, Pa.) pitched 1.2 innings, yielding two earned runs on five hits.
GAME TWO: Towson 6 – Mount St. Mary's 1
Gonzalez's solo shot in the top of the seventh proved to be the bright spot for the Mount in a 6-1 game two defeat.
Towson again received a gem in the circle, this time courtesy of Megan Dejter, who gave up just three hits in a complete-game win. For the Mount, Danni Cummings (Owings, Md.) worked out of jams throughout the game, but fell victim to three Towson home runs as part of a complete-game effort with five earned runs on 10 hits.
The Tigers got on the board in the second on Baltazar's RBI single up the middle for a 1-0 lead. The advantage ballooned to 4-0 when Kendyl Scott and McCormick both smacked home runs for Towson as part of a three-run third.
Holiday Cahill followed with a solo home run in the fifth, and Olivia Yarbrough drove in Towson's sixth run on an RBI triple in the sixth.
The Mount's run came on Gonzalez's home run over the fence in right center field in the top of the seventh.
