Mount St. Mary's Softball Downed by Central Connecticut

Emmitsburg, Md. (April 12, 2015)--The Mount St. Mary's University softball team dropped both games of a Sunday doubleheader to visiting Central Connecticut at Our Lady of the Meadows Field on campus.  The Mount lost by the score of 2-0 in the opener before falling 12-2 in game two.

GAME 1:  Central Connecticut 2, Mount St. Mary's 0

In the opening game of the doubleheader, the Mountaineers were held to two hits in a 2-0 loss to Northeast Conference leader Central Connecticut.  Marian Ruf allowed two runs (one earned) in a complete-game for the Mountaineers.

The Blue Devils (21-7, 8-0 NEC) scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to secure the win.  In the fourth, Evie Rentzel drove home Kat Malcolm with the game's first run on a two-out double.  In the fifth, Brittany Camara's fielder's choice brought home Mackenzie Keys to make it 2-0.

CCSU pitcher Laura Messina allowed just two hits with seven strikeouts in the game.  Marisa Mayes and Maria Santiago had the Mount's hits in the game.

GAME 2:  Central Connecticut 12, Mount St. Mary's 2

In the second game, Rentzel hit a grand slam in the top of the fifth to break open a close game in Central Connecticut's 12-2 win.  Niki Gonzalez had a two-run double for the Mountaineers in the game.

THe Blue Devils scored three times in the second to take a 3-0 lead.  The Mount (6-24, 1-7 NEC) got back in the game with a pair of runs in the third.  Jessica Greenwald and Morgan Alisauckas singled to put runners on first and third with one out.  Gonzalez followed with a double to plate both runners to cut the deficit to 3-2.

The score remained that way until the top of the fifth when CCSU scored five times to break the game open.  The Blue Devils loaded the bases with two outs, and Tori Constantin was hit by a pitch to force home a run.  Rentzel was the next batter, and she homered to clear the bases to stretch the lead to 8-2.  CCSU added four runs in the top of the sixth to seal the win.

Greenewald went 2-for-3 for the Mount while Megan Baker, Gonzalez and Mayes each were 1-for-3 at the plate in the game. Ruf started for the Mount, allowing eight runs (seven earned) in five innings of work.

Messina pitched game two for the Blue Devils as well, allowing a pair of runs with 10 strikeouts in six innings.
