Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (March 31, 2015) – In a game that featured a 27-minute rain delay before the first pitch and was ultimately called in the sixth inning due to rain, the Mount St. Mary's softball team suffered a 13-8 loss to visiting Cornell at Our Lady of the Meadows Field on Tuesday. Game two of Tuesday's originally scheduled doubleheader was cancelled due to rain.
For the Mount (6-20), Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week Niki Gonzalez (Tucson, Ariz.) blasted her fourth home run of the season, but Cornell (8-10) posted 13 runs on 13 hits to earn the road victory.
The Big Red jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Mount got three runs back in the bottom of the frame to cut the deficit down to 5-3. Rachel Teti (Mt. Airy, Md.) knocked an RBI single to right to score the first run before Gonzalez picked up an RBI groundout. Two batters later, Maria Santiago (Buena, N.J.) grounded out to the pitcher, allowing the Mount's third run to score.
The Big Red answered back with three more runs in the second for an 8-3 advantage.
Morgan Alisauckas (Pottsville, Pa.) continued her strong freshman campaign with an RBI single through the right side of the infield in the bottom of the second to get another run back for the Mountaineers.
After Cornell was able to tack on three more runs in the third, Gonzalez led off the bottom of the inning with a solo home run. The Mount would go onto score additional runs in the frame on an RBI double from Rachel Heinze (Charlotte Hall, Md.) followed by a single by Jessica Greenewald (Morrisville, Pa.). For the fourth run of the inning to cut the deficit to 11-8, Heinze scored from third when Greenewald got caught in a rundown.
Cornell tacked on two insurance runs when Sophie Giaquinto delivered a pinch hit two-run home run in the top of the fourth inning.
In the circle for the Mount, Sam Lichtner (Morgantown, Pa.) pitched 1.1 innings, allowing six earned runs on five hits, while Danni Cummings (Owings, Md.) tossed the other 4.0 innings, giving up three earned runs on eight hits. Maddie Orcutt allowed just one hit over the final 1.2 innings to earn the win for Cornell.
Nine different players recorded hits on the day for the Big Red in the victory.
Next on the schedule, the Mount will head to Fairfield, Conn. to take on Sacred Heart for a doubleheader on Friday, April 3.
