Mount Softball Hosts Cornell for Second Time This Season

MOUNT UPDATE: The Mount takes a break from Northeast Conference play with a home doubleheader versus Cornell on Tuesday. The Mountaineers are coming off a 3-3 week that included a sweep of Coppin State and another win over Bryant. 

LAST TIME OUT: The Mount completed the first weekend of Northeast Conference action with a pair of losses at Robert Morris on Sunday afternoon. The Mountaineers fell in game one, 7-3, and dropped the second game by an 11-6 margin. Rachel Teti knocked two home runs to lead the offense on the day with Niki Gonzalez, Tori Belloc and Rachel Heinze all finishing with one home run apiece.

ABOUT CORNELL: The Big Red, which is scheduled to take on Morgan State in a doubleheader today, stands at 5-10 overall this season. Seven Cornell batters are hitting .300 or better with Karlie Mellott posting a .408 average. In the circle, Maddie Orcutt has logged a team-high 35.1 innings and compiled the most wins on the team with three.

LAST TIME VS. CORNELL: The Mount and Cornell split a doubleheader earlier this season on March 22 at Our Lady of the Meadows Field. The Mount posted an 8-5 win in the opening game while seeing a late rally come up short in a 9-7 loss in game two. Junior Marisa Mayes belted a go-ahead three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth to pace the Mount to an 8-5 win over Cornell in the opening game of the twinbill.

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. CORNELL: Through seven games between the two schools, the all-time series is tied at 3-3-1. Six of the matchups have been played in Emmitsburg, Md. with the Mount holding a 2-3-1 record at home in the series.

POWER HITTING: Through 25 games, seven different players have hit home runs for the Mount, which has compiled 20 homers overall. Freshman Morgan Alisauckas leads the way with six home runs, followed closely by Rachel Teti with five. Last season, the Mount hit 12 home runs in 44 games with six different players knocking home runs on the year. 

NEC PRESEASON POLL: Mount St. Mary's was selected to finish eighth in the annual Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. Central Connecticut was picked first in the poll with four first-place votes, followed closely by Bryant, which also picked up four top votes. LIU Brooklyn and Robert Morris finished 3-4 in the poll with the Blackbirds of LIU picking up the final first-place vote. FDU, Saint Francis U and Wagner followed, with the Mount finishing ahead of Sacred Heart in this year's poll.

UP NEXT: The Mount continues Northeast Conference action with a road doubleheader at Sacred Heart on Friday, April 3. Game times are slated for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
