Mount St. Mary's Men's Lacrosse Cruises Past Sacred Heart, 10-2

Emmitsburg, Md. (March 28, 2015)--Evan Gormley (Mentor, Ohio) and Bubba Johnson (Wyoming, Del.) each had three goals while goalkeeper Matt Vierheller (Forest Hill, Md.) made 13 saves to lead Mount St. Mary's to a 10-2 win over Sacred Heart on Saturday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium on campus.

The Mount (3-6, 1-1 NEC) controlled the game from the start, outshooting the Pioneers 16-to-2 in the opening quarter.  Sacred Heart goalie Jon Flood kept his team in the game, making five of his eight first-quarter saves in the opening 10 minutes. 

Gormley got the Mount on the scoreboard with his first goal of the game with 3:57 left in the quarter.  Mark Hojnoski (West Springfield, Mass.) pushed the Mountaineer lead to 2-0, scoring with 21 seconds left in the quarter. 

Johnson extended the Mount advantage to 3-0 when he converted a feed from Justin Gosnell (Aberdeen, Md.) just over five minutes into the second quarter.  The Mount maintained that lead, taking a 3-0 lead at the half.

Mount St. Mary's stretched its advantage to 6-0 with 4:31 left in the third quarter.  Gormley scored just 53 seconds into the second half while Johnson's second goal of the game came midway through the quarter.  Gormley completed his hat trick to make it 6-0 before a Bryce Jurk goal got the Pioneers on the scoreboard.  The Mount's Clayton Wainer (Del Rio, Texas) countered with a goal to give the Mount a 7-1 lead heading into the final quarter of play.

Sacred Heart's Julian Garritano scored an extra-man goal 4:21 into the final period to cut the deficit to 7-2.  The Mount, however, scored the final three goals of the game to seal the win.  Gosnell scored a pair of goals over that span while Johnson completed his hat trick on a nice move after a feed from Nick Firman (Fayetteville, N.Y.) in transition.

The Mount finished the game with a 36-30 edge in shots and a 29-24 advantage in ground balls.  Senior Nick Haley (Ferndale, Md.) won 9-of-15 face-offs while collecting six ground balls in the win.  Firman also had six ground balls while Kyle O'Brien (Arnold, Md.) and Alex Stefkovich (Trumbull, Conn.) each had a pair of caused turnovers.

Flood finished the game with 14 saves for Sacred Heart, while Jurk led the offense with a goal and an assist.

The Mount returns to action on Saturday, April 4, with a 12:00 p.m. home matchup with Bucknell at Waldron Family Stadium on campus.

Game Notes:  The Mount holds a 7-2 lead in the all-time series with Sacred Heart...The eight-goal victory was the Mount's largest since a 14-6 win over Georgetown on March 12, 2013...The two goals allowed were the fewest by a Mount team since an 8-2 win over St. Joseph's in the championship game of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament on May 4, 2003.
