Box Score 2 Emmitsburg, Md. (March 25, 2015) – Senior pitcher Danni Cummings (Owings, Md.) earned a pair of victories, and the bats came alive to the tune of four home runs to help the Mount St. Mary's softball team sweep Wednesday's doubleheader with Coppin State at Our Lady of the Meadows Field.
Mount St. Mary's (5-16) cruised to an 11-0 victory in five innings in game one before earning a 7-5 victory in comeback fashion in the nightcap.
Freshman Morgan Alisauckas (Pottsville, Pa.) belted a pair of home runs with sophomore Rachel Heinze (Charlotte Hall, Md.) and freshman Niki Gonzalez (Tucson, Ariz.) also hitting homers for the Mount in the victories over Coppin State (0-14).
Through 21 games, the Mount has now hit 15 home runs, surpassing last year's total of 12 homers in 44 games.
GAME ONE: Mount St. Mary's 11 - Coppin St. 0 (5 Innings)
The Mount jumped on Coppin State in the bottom of the first with the first of Alisauckas' home runs, a two run shot over the left field fence.
In the second, the advantage grew to 3-0 on an RBI groundout by Rachel Gavigan (Vineland, N.J.) to plate Marisa Mayes (Mesa, Ariz.), who led off the inning with a single.
Alisauckas continued to swing a hot bat with her solo home run that cleared the wall in left center for a 4-0 lead in the third to open a six-run inning for the home side. Tori Belloc (Casa Grande, Ariz.) knocked in an RBI double then scored when Mayes added an RBI double of her own for a 6-0 advantage. Later in the third with the bases loaded, Megan Baker (Waynesboro, Pa.) registered a single to plate two runs, and Alisauckas added an RBI double.
The Mountaineers added an insurance run on Heinze's second home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth.
In the circle for the Mount, Cummings hurled a complete-game shutout, yielding just three singles in game one. The Eagles did not manage to get a runner to second until the fifth inning.
GAME TWO: Mount St. Mary's 7 – Coppin St. 5
Coppin State took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first on Candice Van Horn's single to score Danielle Smith and Shelby Mendoza. The Mount quickly responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame to level the score at 2-2. The Mount's runs came on a Coppin State error and a sacrifice fly by Gonzalez.
The Eagles were able to put another two runs on the board courtesy of a Smith home run to take a 4-2 lead in the second before tacking on one more run in the third.
The Mountaineers clawed back into the game with three runs in the fourth to even things up at 5-5. Gonzalez reached on an error with the bases loaded for the first run. Shea McFarland (Huntingtown, Md.) knocked in the next run on a fielder's choice, and Heinze singled in the tying run.
In the bottom of the sixth, Gonzalez came through with the big hit, crushing a two-run home run to left center field that proved to be the game winner.
Cummings notched the win with three scoreless innings of relief, allowing just two hits and one walk. Mount starter Sam Lichtner (Morgantown, Pa.) struck out three batters, giving up four earned runs on five hits in four innings of work.
