Box Score 2 Riverdale, N.Y. (March 16, 2015) – The Mount St. Mary's softball team dropped a doubleheader at Gaelic Park on Monday at Manhattan College, falling by scores of 6-1 and 14-7.
Offensively for the Mountaineers (1-14), Rachel Gavigan (Vineland, N.J.) and Morgan Alisauckas (Pottsville, Pa.) both hit home runs in game two.
GAME ONE: Manhattan 6 – Mount St. Mary's 1
Mount St. Mary's dug itself a 5-0 hole through two innings and was never able to recover in a 6-1 loss in game one.
Manhattan (6-3) put up five runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead. The scoring started with a bases-clearing double from Stephanie Reinhardt for a 3-0 lead. Later in the frame, the Jaspers pulled off a double steal that allowed Emily Cutler to score from third and picked up the fifth run on a Mount throwing error.
The Jaspers tacked on an insurance run in the fifth for a 6-0 edge.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Mount managed to get a run back on a fielder's choice from Marian Ruf (Mesa, Ariz.) after back-to-back singles to begin the inning. Manhattan pitcher Erin Hamm worked out of the jam by inducing a double play.
Hamm pitched the final two innings for Manhattan, giving up one run on two hits. Amy Brights picked up the win in 5.0 innings of work that included zero runs on three hits.
Despite striking out seven batters, Ruf took the loss for the Mountaineers with five earned runs on five hits in 6.0 innings.
GAME TWO: Manhattan 14 – Mount St. Mary's 7
Gavigan and Alisauckas knocked home runs to help the Mount score a season-high seven runs in the team's 14-7 loss in game two.
Trailing 2-0, the Mountaineers took the lead with a four-run third inning. Megan Baker (Waynesboro, Pa.) reached on an error and Jessica Greenewald (Morrisville, Pa.) followed with a walk before Alisauckas smacked a home run over the left field fence. The Mount's offensive charge continued with back-to-back doubles from Rachel Teti (Mt. Airy, Md.) and Tori Belloc (Casa Grande, Ariz.) for a 4-2 lead.
In the bottom of the frame however, the Jaspers bounced back with six runs on five hits to regain the advantage at 8-4. Three more runs in the fifth gave Manhattan an 11-4 lead.
The Mount chipped away at the deficit in the top of the sixth with an RBI single courtesy of Marisa Mayes (Mesa, Ariz.) that plated Devon Hutchins (Bailey Island, Maine) followed by Gavigan's two-run home run to center.
Sam Lichtner (Morgantown, Pa.) was tagged with the loss for the Mount, yielding eight earned runs on 13 hits in 5.0 innings. Manhattan's Briana Matazinsky earned the win in the circle with six earned runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings of work.
The Mount will return to Maryland for a road doubleheader at UMBC tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Baltimore.
