Box Score 2 Riverdale, N.Y. (March 15, 2015) – Competing for the first time in two weeks, the Mount St. Mary's softball team was handed a pair of losses on Sunday at Gaelic Park, the home field of Manhattan College. The Mount (1-12) lost game one to the host Jaspers, 15-6, in five innings before falling by a 3-2 final score in eight innings to reigning America East regular season champion Stony Brook in the nightcap.
Sophomore Jessica Greenewald (Morrisville, Pa.) went 4-for-7 at the plate on the day to lead the Mount's offense.
GAME ONE: Manhattan 15 – Mount St. Mary's 6 (5 Innings)
The Mountaineers tied a season high with six runs, but the Jaspers pounded out 15 runs on 14 hits including four home runs to come away with a 15-6 victory. Senior Rachel Teti (Mt. Airy, Md.) smacked her second home run of the season as part of a six-run second inning for the Mount in the loss.
After Manhattan (4-3) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Mount responded with six runs in the top of the second to gain the upper hand.
Maria Santiago (Buena, N.J.) knocked in the Mount's first run with a one-out single down the left field line to plate Rachel Gavigan (Vineland, N.J.). Megan Baker (Waynesboro, Pa.) followed with an RBI groundout before Greenewald's RBI double made it 3-1 in favor of the Mount. A single from Morgan Alisauckas (Pottsville, Pa.) put runners on the corners before Teti knocked a three-run homer to left for a 6-1 Mount edge.
Manhattan trimmed the Mount's advantage to 6-3 in the bottom of the second on an Emily Cutler double and a Mount fielding error.
The Jaspers took control of the game with six more runs in the bottom of the third on three-consecutive home runs for a 9-6 lead. Mickayla Romero unloaded the bases with a grand slam with Elena Bowman and Jenn Vazquez following with solo shots.
Four runs in the fourth and two in the fifth for Manhattan helped the home side put the game away.
The Mountaineers finished with six runs on eight hits, including a 3-for-3 effort from Greenewald.
Manhattan pitcher Amy Bright yielded six runs on eight hits while striking out seven to take the win. For the Mount, Danni Cummings (Owings, Md.) was tagged for the loss after giving up nine earned runs on nine hits in the first 2.2 innings.
GAME TWO: Stony Brook 3 – Mount St. Mary's 2 (8 Innings)
Freshman pitcher Marian Ruf (Mesa, Ariz.) scattered 11 hits while holding Stony Brook to just three runs to take the tough loss in extra innings by a 3-2 final score in game two.
The Seawolves (7-8) got on the board first with Lexie Shue's solo home run in the top of the fourth inning. The Mountaineers quickly answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 2-1 advantage. Teti's single followed by a Stony Brook error allowed Greenewald to score the Mount's first run. The next batter, Tori Belloc (Casa Grande, Ariz.) reached on a fielder's choice that plated Alisauckas from third for a 2-1 lead.
An RBI single for Stony Brook's Lauren Kamachi knotted the game at 2-2 in the top of the fifth.
The score would remain tied until the top of the eighth when the Seawolves registered the game-winning run on a Mount error that allowed Chelsea Evans to score from second for the 3-2 win.
Stony Brook's starting pitcher, Jane Sallen, lasted 6.0 innings, striking out five while giving up two earned runs on five hits. Allison Cukrov picked up the win with three strikeouts in two scoreless innings of work.
The Mount is back in action tomorrow with a doubleheader versus Manhattan at Gaelic Park beginning at 10 a.m.
