Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (February 28, 2015)--Byron Ashe (Washington, D.C.) scored a team-high 19 points as Mount St. Mary's topped Wagner, 74-64, in Northeast Conference action at Knott Arena on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Mount finishes the regular season with a 15-14 overall record and an 11-7 mark in the NEC.
The game also marked the final regular season home game for seniors Kristijan Krajina (Osijek, Croatia) and Aaron Brown (Fort Worth, Texas).
Mount St. Mary's jumped to a 6-1 lead in the early minutes and led wire-to-wire. The Seahawks cut the Mount advantage to 18-17 with 6:54 left in the first half, but the Mountaineers answered with an Andrew Smeathers (Bargersville, Ind.) three-pointer and a pair of Taylor Danaher (Fredericksburg, Va.) free throws to push the lead back to six.
Krajina added a three-point play late in the half to give the Mount a 34-25 lead before Wagner scored a late basket to make it 34-27 at the half.
The Mountaineers opened the second half with an 11-to-4 run to take a 45-31 lead with 16:37 remaining. Smeathers started the run with a three-pointer while Junior Robinson (Mebane, N.C.) capped the spurt with a fast-break lay-up.
Wagner (10-19, 8-10 NEC) answered with a 12-to-2 run to cut the Mount advantage to 47-43 with 11:58 on the clock. Ashe, however, connnected on back-to-back three-pointers to give the Mount a double-digit advantage. The Mount led by double figures the rest of the way to earn the victory.
Ashe finished with 19 points and six rebounds while Will Miller (Dallas, Texas) and Smeathers each chipped in 11 points in the win. Robinson scored all 10 of his points in the second half while Khalid Nwandu (York, Pa.) had six points and a career-high nine rebounds for the Mountaineers.
Mike Aaman led Wagner with 21 points and six rebounds while Corey Henson (13 pts.) and Allen (12 pts.) also reached double figures. The Mount held Wagner leading scorer Marcus Burton, who entered the game averaging 18.1 points per game, off the scoreboard. Burton had 38 points in Wagner's 85-83 double-overtime win over the Mount on January 5.
The Mount shot 46.7 percent in the win, including 9-of-25 (.360) from three-point range. The Mount held a 39-to-34 advantage on the boards while holding Wagner to 37.7 percent shooting in the game.
The Mount finished in fourth place in the Northeast Conference and will host fifth-seeded Saint Francis University on Wednesday, March 4, at 7:00 p.m. at Knott Arena.
