Box Score 2 Conway, S.C. (February 27, 2015) – Day one of the Coastal Carolina Invitational ended with the Mount St. Mary's softball team picking up losses to Atlantic-10 opponent Saint Joseph's, 13-0, and reigning Big South runner-up Coastal Carolina, 11-3, on Friday.
With the losses, the Mountaineers fall to 0-7 with four more games still on the schedule at the three-day tournament.
GAME ONE: Saint Joseph's 13 – Mount St. Mary's 0 (5 Innings)
Saint Joseph's, which is coming off a trip to the Atlantic-10 Semifinals a year ago, put together 13 runs on 14 hits to sprint past the Mount in game one on Friday, 13-0. After two runs in the top of the second, the Hawks (3-3) broke the game open with an eight-run third to pull away.
Freshman Niki Gonzalez (Tucson, Ariz.) continued her hot hitting with a 2-for-2 performance that included a single and a double to lead the Mount's offense.
Saint Joseph's pitcher Madison Clark tossed a complete game shutout, yielding just the two hits while striking out three. The Mountaineers put runners on third base in the first and second innings but were never able to break through for a run.
For the Mount, Danni Cummings (Owings, Md.) pitched the first 3.0 innings with four earned runs on eight hits, while Sam Lichtner (Morgantown, Pa.) went 2.0 innings in relief, allowing three earned runs on six hits.
GAME TWO: Coastal Carolina 11 – Mount St. Mary's 3 (5 Innings)
A 41-game winner last season, Coastal Carolina used a 10-run fourth inning to run away with the game in an 11-3 Mount loss in Friday's nightcap. The Chanticleers pounded four home runs on the game, all in the fourth inning.
Coastal Carolina (8-6) opened the scoring with a single run in the bottom of the third inning following a Mount error. The 10 runs in the fourth on home runs from Morgan Noad, Amanda Daneker, Kelsey Dominik and Annie Robinson put the game out of reach for the home side.
After singles from Marisa Mayes (Mesa, Ariz.) and Maria Santiago (Buena, N.J.) in the top of the fifth, sophomore Rachel Heinze (Charlotte Hall, Md.) smacked her second career home run and first of the season to cut the Mount's deficit to 11-3. She is the third Mountaineer with a homer in 2015.
Kelsey Dominik struck out four Mount batters in a complete-game victory for the Chanticleers, giving up three earned runs on four hits.
The Coastal Carolina Invitational continues tomorrow with games versus Loyola-Chicago at 12:30 p.m. and Coastal Carolina at 5:30 p.m.
