Mount Softball Falls in Close Game at Georgia Tech, 2-0

Box Score

Atlanta (February 22, 2015) – In just her second career start, freshman pitcher Marian Ruf (Mesa, Ariz.) limited Georgia Tech to two hits in a complete game, but the Mount softball team's offense could not break through in a 2-0 loss on Sunday to close out the Georgia Tech-Georgia State Invitational at Mewborn Field.

For the Mount (0-5), Ruf walked 11 batters, working out of jams throughout the game to hold the Yellow Jackets (7-8) to single runs in the fourth and sixth innings.  The Mountaineers outhit Georgia Tech, 5-2, but Christina Biggerstaff struck out 12 Mount batters to pick up the complete game shutout.

Ruf found herself in early trouble when the Yellow Jackets loaded the bases in the top of the first with no outs. After an infield pop up for the first out, the rookie pitcher was able to induce a double play to escape without giving up a run.

Georgia Tech stranded 11 runners in the game, leaving the bases loaded in the first, second and fourth innings. The Yellow Jackets got on the board in the fourth with three-consecutive walks followed by a wild pitch and added an insurance run in the sixth inning on an RBI groundout from Katie Johnsky.

The Mountaineers threatened with runners on second base in the fourth, fifth and seventh, but did not have more than one hit in any one inning.

Senior Rachel Teti (Mount Airy, Md.) and sophomore Rachel Heinze (Charlotte Hall, Md.) both picked up their team leading third hits of the season on the afternoon. Morgan Alisauckas (Pottsville, Pa.), Tori Belloc (Casa Grande, Ariz.) and Maria Santiago (Buena, N.J.) also added singles for the Mount.

Defensively, the Mountaineers turned one double play and had their second error-free performance of the young season.

Next up, the Mount will compete at the Coastal Carolina Invitational from Feb. 27-March 1.
