Box Score 2 Atlanta (February 20, 2015) – The Mount St. Mary's softball team began the 2015 season on Friday with a pair of losses at Georgia Tech as part of the opening day of the Georgia Tech-Georgia State Invitational at Mewborn Field. The Yellow Jackets defeated the Mount by scores of 10-0 and 12-2 on the day.
Mount St. Mary's fell to 0-2 on the year, while Georgia Tech improved to 4-8.
GAME ONE: Georgia Tech 10 – Mount St. Mary's 0 (5 Innings)
In the season opener in game one, the Mount fell behind early as Georgia Tech scored two runs on three hits in the first inning in a 10-0 win for the host Yellow Jackets.
Georgia Tech would tack on one more run in the second inning and two more in the third to take a 5-0 advantage.
The Yellow Jackets put the game out of reach with five runs in the bottom of the fourth for the 10-0 victory. Georgia Tech knocked back-to-back home runs in the inning with Courtney Ziese sending a three-run homer over the left field fence, followed by a solo shot from Maddie Lionberger.
Georgia Tech's starting pitcher Emily Anderson gave up just two hits and two walks in four innings with Christina Biggerstaff closing out the game with a scoreless fifth.
For the Mount, Megan Baker (Waynesboro, Pa.) and Rachel Heinze (Charlotte Hall, Md.) both picked up singles in game one. Sophomore Sam Lichtner (Morgantown, Pa.) pitched all four innings for the Mount, yielding nine earned runs on nine hits to take the loss.
GAME TWO: Georgia Tech 12 – Mount St. Mary's 2 (5 Innings)
Georgia Tech pitchers Kylie Kleinschmidt and Biggerstaff combined to throw a no-hitter in game two as the Mount fell by a 12-2 final score.
Kleinschmidt, who was the Yellow Jackets' starter, gave up two earned runs on three walks while recording just one out. Biggerstaff entered in relief, striking out seven Mountaineers in the final 4.2 innings to earn the victory.
With the Mount serving as the home team, Georgia Tech posted five runs in the top of the first to take command in the early going.
The Mount would answer back with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Leadoff hitter Jessica Greenewald (Morrisville, Pa.) started the inning with a walk and took second on a sacrifice bunt from Baker. Greenewald took third on a balk, and after Rachel Gavigan (Vineland, N.J.) walked, Greenewald scored the Mount's first run on an illegal pitch that also moved Gavigan to second.
Another illegal pitch advanced Gavigan to third with freshman Niki Gonzalez (Tucson, Ariz.) picking up an RBI groundout to cut the Mount's deficit to 5-2.
The Yellow Jackets scored an additional five runs in the third and two in the fifth, finishing with 12 runs on 10 hits.
In the circle for the Mountaineers, Danni Cummings (Owings, Md.) fanned three batters while giving up 12 earned runs in five innings.
The Mount continues the GT-GSU Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 21, with a pair of games at the Heck Softball Complex, home of the Georgia State Panthers. The Mountaineers will take on Presbyterian at 11 a.m. and Georgia State at 1:30 p.m.
