Mount St. Mary's Loses Heartbreaker at Wagner in Double Overtime

Box Score

Staten Island, N.Y. (January 5, 2015)—Mount St. Mary's dropped a heart-breaker at Wagner, 85-83, in double overtime on Monday night in Northeast Conference action.  The Mount's Gregory Graves posted his second consecutive double-double with career highs of 26 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.

Wagner's Marcus Burton, who scored a game-high 38 points, hit a pair of free throws with 18.0 seconds left to give the Seahawks the 85-83 lead.  The Mount inbounded the ball, and worked it to Byron Ashe on the right wing.  Ashe's three-pointer was off the mark, but Graves was able to corral the rebound, but his last-second shot was blocked by Stedman Allen, allowing Wagner to escape with the win.

The Mount (4-9, 0-2 NEC) had tied the game at 83-83 when Charles Glover hit 1-of-2 at the line with 37 seconds on the clock.

In the first overtime, the Mount led 74-70 after a Junior Robinson drive, but the Seahawks scored the next six points to take the lead.  Robinson then scored on a drive, and Ashe converted a lay-up off a scramble for a 78-76 MSM lead.  The Mount forced a turnover and had a chance to extend the lead, but Chris Martin missed both attempts with 18 seconds left in the first overtime, allowing Wagner a chance to tie.  Burton was able to do so, converting a drive to the bucket to force the second OT.

At the end of regulation, a Graves lay-up gave the Mount a 65-64 lead with just over a minute left.  The Mount forced a miss, and Robinson hit a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 67-64.  After a Wagner (3-10, 1-1 NEC) miss, the Mount got the ball back, but turned it over on the Wagner press, and Wagner's Ramone Saunders nailed a three-pointer with 5.7 seconds left to force overtime.

Graves hit 14-of-17 shot at the foul line while adding a 6-for-12 night from the field for his career-best 26 points.  He added a career-high 12 rebounds for his second double-double in a row, and the third of his career.  Robinson added a career-high 17 points with Ashe finishing with 13 points off the bench.

Burton went 13-of-24 from the floor and 9-of-10 at the line for his game-high 38 points.  Saunders added a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds in the win.

The Mount shot 40.0 percent in the game and held a 44-41 advantage on the boards.  The Mountaineers were 29-of-38 (.763) at the charity stripe.  Wagner shot 40.6 percent (28-of-69) and was 24-for-33 (.727) at the line in the game.

The Mountaineers opened the second half with a 19-to-9 run to take a 50-35 advantage with 11:53 left in regulation.  Wagner slowly cut into the deficit, eventually tying the game at 60-60 on a pair of Burton basket with 4:14 left in regulation.

In the first half, the Mountaineers got off to another cold start, missing their first 11 shots as Wagner took a 6-0 advantage.  The Mount's Taylor Danaher broke the cold streak with a bucket in the lane with 13:08 left.

Wagner was able to extend its early lead to 13-5 with 8:49 in the first half before the Mount got back in the game with a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 13-12. Graves started the spurt with a traditional three-point play with Ashe scoring a fast-break bucket.  Graves capped the run with a lay-up on a feed from Ashe.

Wagner pushed to a 21-16 lead, but the Mount fought back to tie the game on a Khalid Nwandu free throw, and then took its first lead of the half on a Graves basket with 1:29 left.  Wagner's Hugo Naurais evened the score, but the Mount's Andrew Smeathers scored five points over the final 30 seconds of the game to give the Mount a 31-26 lead at the break.  Smeathers nailed a three-pointer, and after a Mount stop on the other end, scored a fast-break basket with two seconds left for a five-point Mountaineer advantage.

The Mount finished the first half 10-of-31 (.323) from the floor and 3-of-10 from three-point range.  Wagner converted just 8-of-31 shots (.258) in the first half with the Mount holding a 25-22 advantage on the boards.
