Box Score Brooklyn, N.Y. (Jan. 29, 2015)—Mount St. Mary's was edged by St. Francis Brooklyn, 73-67, in overtime in Northeast Conference action on Thursday night at the Pope Physical Education Center. Junior Robinson scored a career-high 22 points for the Mount in the loss.
A Byron Ashe lay-up with 3:25 left in regulation gave the Mountaineers a 61-56 lead with that score holding until the final minute. St. Francis Brooklyn's Brent Jones hit 1-of-2 at the line, then got the rebound off his miss, and converted a traditional three-point play to make it a 61-60 game with 39 seconds left.
Robinson was then fouled, and hit both free throws to give the Mountaineers (9-11, 5-4 NEC) a three-point lead, but the Terriers (13-9, 7-2 NEC) evened the score on a Glenn Sanabria three-pointer with 24 seconds left.
In a frantic final possession, the Mount and St. Francis each turned the ball over, forcing the overtime period.
In overtime, Jones connected on six free throws while Jalen Cannon added four points, including the go-ahead basket with 49 seconds left that gave St. Francis at 69-67 advantage. Robinson drove the lane, but his shot was off the mark, and Jones was fouled. He hit both free throws to push the lead to 71-67.
Robinson paced the Mount with his career-high 22 points while Chris Martin added 14 points off the bench. Ashe added 10 points for the Mount off the bench in the loss.
Cannon led all scorers with 26 points while adding 13 rebounds for a double-double. Jones added 18 points, nine rebounds and five assists for St. Francis Brooklyn in the win.
Mount St. Mary's raced to a 14-4 lead in the opening six minutes of the game. Robinson scored the first five points of the contest on a three-pointer and a floater, and Taylor Danaher made it 7-0 with a dunk on a pick-and-roll.
After the Terriers cut the margin to 9-4, Byron Ashe scored on a fast break, and Robinson added a traditional three-point play to give the Mount a 10-point lead with 13:52 left in the first half.
The Terriers chipped away at the lead, cutting the gap to 18-15 before the Mount's Martin hit a pair of three-pointers to make it 24-17. St. Francis Brooklyn continued to fight back, and cut the Mount advantage to 27-26 at the break on a Cannon three-pointer with 10 seconds left in the half.
Martin led the Mount with 12 first-half points while Robinson added eight. Cannon had 13 points and seven boards in the opening half.
The Mount is back in action on Saturday, January 31, with 2:00 p.m. matchup at Sacred Heart. The game will air live on ESPN3.
