Pagano Tosses Another Shutout to Help Mount Softball Split with Robert Morris

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Emmitsburg, Md. (April 6, 2014) – A day after breaking the Mount softball career wins record with a no-hitter, senior pitcher Nicole Pagano followed up with a complete-game shutout of Robert Morris in game two to help the Mountaineers split a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Our Lady of the Meadows Field. Robert Morris won game one, 10-0, and the Mount took the second game by a 1-0 final score.

The Mount (13-15-1, 3-1 NEC) completed the weekend with a 3-1 record following yesterday's sweep of Sacred Heart. Pagano pitched her fourth-consecutive complete-game shutout and has now gone 30 innings without giving up a run.

The Mount had lost 13 games in a row to the Colonials before game two's victory, and the Mount's win was the first in the series versus Robert Morris since 2007.

GAME 1
ROBERT MORRIS 10 – MOUNT ST. MARY'S 0 (6 Innings)

Robert Morris (18-17, 1-3 NEC) jumped on the Mount early and often in the first game with runs in the first and second innings before breaking the game open with a five-run third. Robert Morris ace Nicole Sleith scattered five hits, while striking out seven in six innings for the victory.

The second batter of the game, Ashley Gerhart, knocked a solo home run over the center field fence to get the scoring going for the Colonials. Leading 2-0 in the third, Robert Morris loaded the bases and scored runs on a wild pitch followed by a single. The RMU advantage grew to 7-0 later in the inning on a fielder's choice followed by a two-RBI double from Chelsea Sair.

Robert Morris tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth to end the game. Lindsey Ruhle went 2-for-2, including a double to lead the Mount's offense in game one. The Mount's starter, Danni Cummings yielded five runs, three of which were earned in two-plus innings of work to take the loss. Sam Lichtner pitched the rest of the game, giving up five runs in four innings.

GAME 2
MOUNT ST. MARY'S 1 – ROBERT MORRIS 0

Pagano kept RMU batters off balance in game two with six strikeouts, while giving up just four hits in the complete game 1-0 victory. The Mount broke a scoreless tie in the sixth to pick up the win.

Both teams produced chances to score earlier in the contest. The Mount loaded the bases in the bottom of the second with one out, but could not get the run across. In the fourth, Rachel Gavigan, who was 2-for-2 in game two, led off with a double. Gavigan moved to third on Alyssa Silipino's groundout, but was stranded at third when the inning ended.

Robert Morris loaded the bases with just one out in the top of the fifth. Pagano was able to work out of the jam, however, by getting two quick outs, including a strikeout of Ashley Gerhart to end the frame.

Holly Buckel began the sixth with a single to right field. Two batters later, when Gavigan knocked a double to left center field, Buckel's aggressive base running allowed her to score from first on the play for the game's only run.

Sleith started for the Colonials, lasting three innings without giving up a run. Sleith gave way to Geena Badolato, who went the final three innings and was tagged with the loss with one earned run.

The Mount is scheduled to play another home doubleheader versus Howard on Tuesday, April 8, beginning at 3 p.m.
