Box Score 2 New Britain, Conn. (April 27, 2014) – The Mount softball team took a pair of road losses at the hands of Central Connecticut State by scores of 3-2 and 2-0 on Sunday afternoon. Nicole Pagano pitched both games for the Mount, giving up just three earned runs in 13.2 innings of work.
The Mount's record now stands at 19-22-1 with a 7-7 Northeast Conference record, while CCSU improves to 27-14 overall and 11-5 in the NEC.
GAME ONE
CENTRAL CONNECTICUT 3 – MOUNT 2
After sprinting out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, the Mount could not hold off a late-inning charge by the Blue Devils that included a walk-off single by Evie Rentzel in the bottom of the seventh in a 3-2 loss.
The Mount sprinted out of the gate with two first-inning runs for a quick 2-0 edge. Jessica Greenewald was hit by a pitch and moved to second on Megan Baker's sacrifice bunt. With one out, Holly Buckel smacked her second home run of the season over the fence in left.
CCSU pitcher Laura Messina took over from there, allowing just one other hit the rest of the game. For the Mount, Pagano was matching Messina pitch-for-pitch until running into trouble in the bottom of the sixth inning.
After Tessa Brown reached on an error, Alexis Debrosse knocked a homer to right to level the score at 2-2. The following inning, the Blue Devils put runners on first and second before a fielder's choice helped both runners advance. With two outs, Rentzel delivered the game-winning single to score Hannah Cooper from third.
Pagano struck out six batters and yielded two earned runs on six hits for the Mount. Messina fanned eight batters, while giving up two runs on two hits.
GAME TWO
CENTRAL CONNECTICUT 2 – MOUNT 0
In a battle between the same pitchers from game one, CCSU's Messina tossed a complete-game one hitter with four strikeouts and one walk to pick up the 2-0 win. Pagano took the loss despite giving up just one earned run on nine hits in six innings.
The Blue Devils scored on Sarah Drazin's two-out single in the bottom of the second to score Debrosse, who reached base on a Mount error to begin the inning.
CCSU added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth for a 2-0 lead. Arielle Bruno's single plated Brittany Ernst from third as part of a two-out rally.
The Mount managed three base runners in game two with Baker reaching on an error in the first, Lindsey Ruhle working a walk in the fifth and Buckel picking up the team's lone hit on a single in the seventh.
The Mount plays at home for the final time with a non-conference doubleheader versus Morgan State on Wednesday, April 30, beginning at 3 p.m.
