Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (April 23, 2014) – The Mount St. Mary's softball team was handed a 3-1 non-conference loss by Towson at Our Lady of the Meadows Field on Wednesday afternoon. Freshman pitcher Sam Lichtner was dealt the loss despite giving up just two earned runs while striking out seven in a complete game.
The Mount (19-18-1) took a 1-0 lead in the second, but Towson (25-18) responded two innings later with three runs to beat the Mountaineers.
In the bottom of the second inning, a Towson fielding error allowed Lindsey Ruhle to reach first, before a wild pitched moved Ruhle to second base. With two outs, Rachel Heinze's single to left field allowed Ruhle to score the Mount's lone run of the afternoon.
Towson's pitcher, Missy McCormick, started the Tigers' rally in the fourth inning with a double to center field. The next batter Delanie Dunham followed with an RBI single down the right field line to level the score at 1-1. Back-to-back singles loaded the bases for Towson before Caitie Barber put the Tigers ahead with an RBI groundout.
Towson scored its final run of the frame on a fielding error by the Mount, allowing Jessica South to touch home for a 3-1 lead.
In a last-ditch effort to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, Megan Baker knocked a two-out double to left field, but was stranded at second when the game ended.
McCormick used 131 pitches during her seven innings of work for Towson, allowing one unearned run on five hits while striking out 13. For the Mount, Lichtner improved her ERA to 2.51 and walked just one batter on the day.
Five different Mount batters recorded hits with Heinze picking up the only RBI. For the Tigers, Courtney Johnson collected two hits to lead the offense.
Next up, the Mount heads into a crucial weekend of Northeast Conference play with road doubleheaders scheduled for Saturday, April 26, at first-place Bryant and at third-place Central Connecticut State on Sunday, April 27. CCSU is the reigning NEC Champion.
