Nicole Pagano Posts No-Hitter as Mount Softball Sweeps LIU Brooklyn on Senior Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Emmitsburg, Md. (April 18, 2014) – The Mount softball team celebrated senior day with the program's first ever sweep of LIU Brooklyn on Friday at Our Lady of the Meadows Field. Senior Nicole Pagano tossed a pair of shutouts, including a no-hitter in game one, to tie the Mount's single-season wins record with 14.

The Mount won game one, 3-0, and took game two, 1-0. Offensively, Rachel Gavigan provided all the runs with a three-run home run in game one before knocking a solo home run in game two. The two wins help the Mount move into a first-place tie with Bryant in the Northeast Conference standings.

The Mount improves its record to 18-16-1 (6-2 NEC), while LIU Brooklyn falls to 16-28 (5-5 NEC).

GAME ONE
MOUNT 3 – LIU BROOKLYN 0
Pagano continued her record-setting season with her second no-hitter of the year and the fourth of her career with eight strikeouts in seven innings. The redshirt-senior from Winslow, N.J. walked just two batters and allowed two other runners to reach base on a hit batsmen and a fielder's choice.

The Mount was kept off the scoreboard until the bottom of the fifth when Gavigan crushed a three-run homer over the centerfield fence for a 3-0 lead. The inning began with Megan Baker getting hit by a pitch followed by a Holly Buckel sacrifice bunt. Cat Clifford was next with a single before Gavigan unleashed her third home run of the season.

LIU's lone threat of scoring came in the top of the fourth when Jazmin Rodriguez reached on a fielder's choice and took second on a Mount error. Pagano was able to work out of the jam by getting a strikeout for the final out.

Gavigan posted a 2-for-3 performance in the game, while Jessica Greenewald went 2-for-4 at the dish. LIU Brooklyn's pitcher, Cassie Vondrak, pitched 5.2 innings, giving up six hits and three earned runs to take the loss.

GAME TWO
MOUNT 1 – LIU BROOKLYN 0
Pagano tossed another gem, scattering five hits without giving up a run for her eighth shutout of the season in game two.

At the plate, the Mount only had four hits, but scored the game's only run on Gavigan's fourth home run of the year in the fourth inning.

In the top of the fifth, the Blackbirds put runners on second and third on Nichole Toven's sacrifice bunt to advance two runners, who had walked to open the frame. Pagano took over from there, shutting down the LIU lineup with a strikeout and fly out to escape trouble.

LIU tried to move a runner to scoring position in the seventh, but Buckel threw out the potential base stealer at second, and Pagano induced a groundout to end the game and complete the sweep.

The Mount hosts another NEC doubleheader tomorrow versus Wagner beginning at noon.

GAME NOTES: The Mount picked up its first-ever sweep of LIU Brooklyn… The Mount improves its all-time record versus the Blackbirds to 11-40.
