Box Score Smithfield, R.I. (April 12, 2014)--The Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse team put in a solid effort, but fell short in a 9-7 loss at No. 17 Bryant on Saturday afternoon. Kyle McDonough had a career-high four assists for the Mountaineers in the game.
In a first half that featured long possessions, Bryant held a narrow 3-2 lead at the half. The Bulldogs took an early 1-0 lead on a Tucker James goal just 2:07 into the contest. Brian Schlansker made it 2-0 with just under four minutes left in the first. The Mount's Clayton Wainer answered that goal, cutting the deficit to 2-1 with the first of his two goals on the day.
Wainer's second goal of the contest evened the score at 2-2 with 1:18 left in the opening half. Bryant, however, got a Shane Morrell score with 11 seconds left in the second quarter to grab a 3-2 advantage.
The Bulldogs (10-3, 3-1 NEC) scored a pair of extra-man goals to open the third quarter to take a 5-2 lead. The Mount's Mike Daly then connected for his first goal of the year to cut the Bryant advantage to 5-3. Daly becomes the 20th different player to score a goal this season for the Mountaineers. Morrell scorec with 1:59 left in the third for Bryant, but Spencer Smith answered for the Mount with his second goal of the year with 28 seconds left in the quarter to make it 6-4.
Bryant opened the fourth by scoring the first two goals to take its biggest lead of the day at 8-4. The pesky Mountaineers hung tough, scoring three of the next four goals to cut the deficit to 9-7 with 2:11 remaining. Bubba Johnson scored twice with Christian Durham adding his first goal of the game during the run. However, Bryant was able to hold off the Mount rally to earn the win.
McDonough led the Mount with four points with his career-best four assists. Johnson finished with two goals and an assist while Wainer added two goals.
Frankie McCarthy started in goal for the Mount, allowing one goal with one save in the first 6:41. Chris Klaiber finished the contest, making nine saves while allowing eight goals in the final 53:19.
James led Byrant with two goals and two assists while Morrell and Schlansker each had two goals and one assist in the game. Gunnar Waldt made seven saves in goal.
Bryant held a narrow 31-27 edge in shots and a 29-20 advantage in ground balls.
Mount St. Mary's is back in action on Monday, April 14, when No. 9 Johns Hopkins visits Waldron Family Stadium. The opening face-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
