Box Score 2 Washington, D.C. (March 9, 2014) – The Mount St. Mary's softball team wrapped up play at the Colonials Tournament on Sunday with a 1-0 loss to Binghamton and a strange turn of events that led to a 2-2 tie versus the host team, George Washington, in game two. It was the first time the Mount tied a softball game since the 2003 season and only the fourth time in school history.
In an extra inning game versus George Washington, the Mount (6-7-1) took a 5-2 lead in the top of the ninth on Lindsey Ruhle's three-run home run. In the bottom of the frame, however, the game was called due to darkness. Because the full inning was not completed, the game reverted back to the score of the eighth inning and ended in a 2-2 tie.
BINGHAMTON 1 – MOUNT ST. MARY'S 0
Mount St. Mary's pitcher Danni Cummings gave up four hits and one unearned run in a complete game loss in Sunday's opener. Binghamton's Demi Laney matched Cummings pitch-for-pitch, hurling a complete-game shutout in the Bearcats' 1-0 win.
The Mountaineers threatened to take a 1-0 lead on Binghamton (6-6) in the top of the first when Holly Buckel opened the game with a double and advanced to third on Jessica Greenewald's sacrifice bunt. Laney worked out of the jam by getting the Mount's next two batters to fly out and strike out.
The Bearcats scored their run in the bottom of the third on an error in the infield that allowed Caytlin Friis to score. Friis was hit by a pitch, stole second and moved to third on a bunt.
The Mount again put runners on second and third with two outs in the top of the fourth but could not get the run across.
The two teams combined for seven hits with no individual recording more than one.
MOUNT ST. MARY'S 2 – GEORGE WASHINGTON 2 (8 innings)
The Mount looked like it was on its way to a victory with a three-run lead in the bottom of the ninth before poor visibility due to darkness forced play to be halted by the umpires.
The back-and-forth affair that saw the Mount outhit the Colonials (4-14-1) by a 7-4 margin, began in the Mount's favor with a 1-0 lead through two innings.
After Casey Beck walked in the top of the second inning, Tori Belloc and Megan Baker followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases. Buckel was next with a sacrifice fly to score Beck for a 1-0 edge.
GW picked up a pair of third inning runs to take a 2-1 advantage. The Colonials scored their runs on a wild pitch and a single to center field by Megan Linn. Mount St. Mary's freshman pitcher Sam Lichtner kept the Colonials off the scoreboard the next three innings before turning the game over to Nicole Pagano, who went the rest of the way. Lichtner allowed two runs on three hits, and Pagano yielded one hit and no runs.
In the top of the fourth, the Mount leveled the score at 2-2 on an error by the Colonials. Baker led off with a single and moved up on a bunt. She proceeded to steal third and trotted home on the error.
The score remained 2-2 until the Mount's three-run home run by Ruhle that was eventually taken off the board due to darkness, ending the game in a tie.
The Mount is scheduled to return to Washington, D.C. for a doubleheader versus George Washington on Tuesday, March 9. Game times are set for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
