Box Score Baltimore, Md. (March 23, 2014) – Senior pitcher Nicole Pagano tied the Mount St. Mary's softball career wins record of 46 with a complete-game shutout of UMBC in a 5-0 victory on Sunday on the final day of the UMBC Spring Classic. Pagano is tied with Zena Edwards '89 with 46 career pitching wins.
The senior from Winslow, N.J. put on a dominating performance by giving up just five singles and one walk, while striking out 10 batters in a shutout to help the Mount improve to 10-14-1 on the season. Pagano, who already holds the program record with 561 career strikeouts, ran her record to 8-5 on the year.
The Mount recorded nine hits to the Retrievers' five and did not commit an error as UMBC (19-9) made five on the afternoon.
Holly Buckel's first-inning RBI single up the middle put the Mount up 1-0. Buckel's RBI knock plated Jessica Greenewald, who led off the game with an infield single.
The game remained 1-0 in favor of the visitors until the Mountaineers tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth inning. After Cat Clifford reached on an error, her pinch runner, Lindsey Ruhle moved to second on a single from Marisa Mayes. Both runners advanced on Alyssa Silipino's groundout, and two batters later Rachel Heinze's single through the left side plated Ruhle and Mayes for a 3-0 Mount advantage.
The Mount added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI double from Rachel Gavigan and an RBI single through the left side of the infield courtesy of Clifford to give the Mountaineers a 5-0 lead.
Pagano retired UMBC in order in the first and last innings of the day, getting three quick outs in the seventh to give the Mount its fourth shutout this season. Only one UMBC runner made it as far as third base on the day.
Pitching for the Retrievers, Jessica Holte went the distance, striking out five Mount batters in the loss. All five runs charged to Holte were unearned.
Offensively, eight of the Mount's nine batters in the lineup picked up hits on the day, led by Clifford's 2-for-4 effort.
Next on the schedule, the Mount is set to host a doubleheader with Morgan State at Our Lady of the Meadows Field on Tuesday, March 25. Game one is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
