Box Score Clearwater, Fla. (March 2, 2014) – The Mount softball team ended the USF Under Armour Invitational on a high note with another dominating pitching performance in a 1-0 shutout win over Temple on Sunday morning. Danni Cummings and Nicole Pagano combined to hurl a two-hitter for the Mount's second-consecutive shutout.
Cummings pitched the first three innings for the Mount (6-5) giving up two hits while striking out two. Head Coach Anna Nagro then turned to Pagano, who tossed the final four innings without giving up a hit to keep Temple (2-8) off the board. Pagano has now yielded just one hit in her last 17 innings of work.
For the second day in a row, the Mount also won in dramatic walk-off fashion, this time scoring in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a scoreless tie.
With one out in the home half of the seventh, Rachel Heinze singled up the middle and took second when Megan Baker reached on a bunt single. On a steal attempt, Heinze was thrown out at third, while Baker advanced to second. The next batter, Jessica Greenewald singled to the left side of the infield, and Baker was able to round the bases and touch home on a Temple throwing error for the game's lone run.
Both teams put themselves in position to score earlier in the game. The Mount had runners on first and third with two outs in the second but could not get a run across. Temple's best scoring opportunity came in the top of the fourth with runners on the corners with one out. Pagano was able to work out of the jam, however, to keep the game scoreless.
Temple's Jessica Mahoney pitched the entire game with six strikeouts. Mahoney gave up just the one unearned run to take the loss. Five different Mount batters accounted for the team's six hits on the morning, including a 2-for-2 effort from Heinze.
Next on the schedule, the Mount is set to compete in the University of Maryland Tournament with five games in three days on March 6-8.
