Box Score Baltimore, Md. (March 16, 2014) – The Mount softball team put on a dominating performance in a 9-0 win over La Salle on Sunday on the final day of the Coppin State Invitational. The nine runs are tied for the second most for the Mount this season.
Nicole Pagano and Danni Cummings combined to give up just three hits in the third shutout this season for the Mount (8-11-1). Pagano struck out four and yielded two hits and two walks in her seventh victory on the season. With 45 career wins, the senior is one win shy of tying Zena Edwards for the program record of 46 set in 1989.
At the plate for the Mount, Cat Clifford, Megan Baker and Rachel Gavigan picked up three hits apiece with Clifford knocking a home run on the afternoon.
La Salle (5-8) never got going and managed just one hit past the first inning.
The Mount scored three runs in the top of the first on a passed ball to score Jessica Greenewald and a single by Gavigan that brought in two runs.
With the bases loaded in the top of the fourth, Holly Buckel knocked a two-RBI single to plate Greenewald and Marisa Mayes for a 5-0 advantage.
In the fifth, Clifford blasted a leadoff home run over the right field fence, and Mayes recorded an RBI on a groundout later in the frame for a 7-0 lead. The Mountaineers scored their eighth and ninth runs on the day on another clutch hit from Gavigan. With the bases full in the top of the sixth, Gavigan's single brought in two runs for the win.
After the Explorers put runners on first and second in the bottom of the sixth, Cummings recorded three-consecutive outs to shut the door to snap a four-game losing streak for the Mount.
Next up, the Mount is set to host a doubleheader versus Coppin State on Wednesday, March 19, at 3 and 5 p.m. for the team's home debut.
