Box Score 2 Baltimore, Md. (March 15, 2014) – The Mount St. Mary's softball team dropped a pair of extra-inning games on day two of the Coppin State Invitational on Saturday. In game one, the Mount lost to UMass-Lowell, 9-8, before falling to the host team Coppin State, 6-5, in games that went to eight innings.
The Mount fell to 7-11-1 with one game remaining in the Coppin State Invitational.
UMASS-LOWELL 9 – MOUNT ST. MARY'S 8 (8 innings)
The Mount needed three more outs to escape with an 8-7 victory, but UMass-Lowell evened the score in at 8-8 in the bottom of the seventh and scored the game-winning run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Brianna Mahoney for a 9-8 win.
Sam Lichtner, Danni Cummings and Nicole Pagano all pitched for the Mount in game one as the trio combined for four strikeouts, while giving up 13 hits.
Holly Buckel went 2-for-4 to pick up two of the Mount's eight hits in the game. Buckel also scored two runs, as did Megan Baker, and Rachel Heinze.
The Mount found itself down 7-2 in the top of the fifth until a line drive from Heinze plated Jessia Greenewald and Megan Baker. Later in the frame, Heinze touched home on a passed ball to trim UMass-Lowell's lead down to 7-5.
After a leadoff triple from Gavigan in the sixth, the speedy sophomore scored on a wild pitch to put the score at 7-6 in favor of the River Hawks. With one out, Baker walked and Buckel followed with a home run to flip the advantage to the Mount at 8-7.
UMass Lowell tied the score at 8-8 on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the seventh. In the bottom of the eighth, the River Hawks bunted a runner to third with no outs before Mahoney delivered a sac fly to center for the game-winning run.
COPPIN STATE 6 – MOUNT ST. MARY'S 5 (8 innings)
The Mount trailed by four runs but battled back to force extra innings in a 6-5 loss to Coppin State.
Cummings pitched five innings, allowing three earned runs on eight hits and Lichtner went 2.1 innings with one hit and zero runs.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, and the advantage swelled to 4-0 in the bottom of the third.
The Mount responded by tying the game with a four-run fourth inning. Rachel Gavigan led off with a solo home run to cut the Mount's deficit to 4-1. After loading the bases, Marisa Mayes knocked a line drive single to score Lindsey Ruhle and Tori Belloc, and the next batter, Jessica Greenewald picked up an RBI groundout to level the score at 4-4.
Shelby Mendoza's solo home run in the home half of the fourth made it 5-4 in favor of the Eagles.
The Mount was down to its final two outs when Gavigan reached on a fielder's choice to plate Mayes from third to even the score at 5-5.
Coppin scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth to pick up the win.
The Mount concludes the Coppin State Invitational tomorrow with a 12:15 p.m. game versus La Salle.
