Mount Softball Drops Games to North Florida and Jacksonville

Jacksonville, Fla. (February 27, 2014) – The Mount softball team dropped a pair of games on Thursday evening, falling to North Florida, 3-2, and Jacksonville, 6-1.

With the two losses, the Mount slips to 3-3 on the season.

NORTH FLORIDA 3 – MOUNT ST. MARY'S 2
Facing the defending Atlantic Sun regular season champion North Florida Ospreys, the Mount yielded a run in the bottom of the seventh to suffer a 3-2 defeat in the first game of the day.

The starter for the Mount, Danni Cummings, scattered seven hits in her four innings of work. The junior allowed two unearned runs before giving way to freshman Sam Lichtner, who pitched the final 2.2 innings.

Offensively, the Mount picked up four hits, including two from senior Lindsey Ruhle. North Florida (14-3) recorded 11 hits with four players finishing with multi-hit games.

The Ospreys picked up two runs in the bottom of the second on a two-run single by Lexi Taylor.

In the top of the fifth, Ruhle's RBI single up the middle scored Holly Buckel, who began the inning with a walk. Ruhle advanced to second on Megan Baker's groundout and scored when Marisa Mayes followed with a single to right center.

North Florida's Kelly Wilson singled to open the bottom of the seventh and stole second. Litchtner got the next two hitters to ground out and pop out to put the Mount one out away from forcing extra innings. Next up, UNF's Abby Tewey delivered the game-winning single to left field for the walk-off victory.

JACKSONVILLE 6 – MOUNT ST. MARY'S 1
Following the afternoon game at North Florida, the Mount traveled to Jacksonville to take on the Dolphins. Jacksonville jumped out to a 4-0 lead through two innings en route to a 6-1 win.

A first inning error by the Mount allowed Jacksonville (8-5) to score two unearned runs for a quick 2-0 lead for the Dolphins. Following up in the second, Codi Kelly, who had a first-inning double, added another two-bagger in the second to score two more runs for a 4-0 edge.

In the top of the third, the Mount scored its only run when Buckel touched home on a wild pitch.

Jacksonville got a run back in the bottom of the third and added one more in the fifth to ice the game.

Lichtner allowed four runs in the first two innings with Nicole Pagano pitching the final four innings with six strikeouts, yielding two runs on three hits. Jacksonville's Taylor Rossman pitched the final 4.2 innings without giving up a run while striking out seven.  

The Mount begins the USF Under Armour Invitational tomorrow with games versus Western Michigan and Toledo.
