Box Score Davidson, N.C. (February 23, 2014)--The Mount St. Mary's baseball team suffered its first loss of the season, 11-0, at Davidson on Sunday afternoon. The Mount is now 2-1 on the season.
The Wildcats scored a pair of runs in the third inning off Mount starter Scott Nickerson to break out to a 2-0 lead. David Daniels had an RBI single and Nathan Becker was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in the second run.
Davidson broke the game open with a six-run fifth inning, highlighed by a Becker grand slam. The Wildcats tacked on two more runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh to round out the scoring.
Zach Hostetter continued his hot start to the season, going 2-for-3 with a double to highlight the Mount offense. Hostetter has hit .500 (6-for-12) with three doubles and three RBIs over the first three games this season.
Freshman Joshua Lenig contributed his first career hit, while Brandon Scott, Tommy Quealy and Andrew Clow also hat base hits in the game.
Nickerson struck out six while allowing two earned runs in four innings of work to take the loss. Justin Trinity added a scoreless inning of relief for the Mountaineers.
The Mount is back in action at No. 2 Mississippi State on Tuesday, February 25, with 4:00 p.m. game.
