Cambridge, Mass. (February 21, 2014) – Mount St. Mary's junior swimmer Erin Regan won her second career individual Northeast Conference title, and the second in program history, as the Mount broke school records in three events at the NEC Championships at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Friday.
The Mount, which is in fifth place with 221.5 points, broke school records in the 100 butterfly, 400 IM and the 400 medley relay on the third day of competition.
Regan topped the school record in the finals of the 100 fly in 55.73. In the 400 IM, Haley Fournier and Sarah Bonson bested the program record entering the day of 4:43.78, before the 400 medley relay squad broke the previous school record in the final event on Friday.
Tied for fifth at the halfway point of the 100 fly finals, Regan made her move in the final half to pass the rest of the field and touch the wall first in a school-record time of 55.73, which was .04 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, Central Connecticut's Kellen Power.
It is the second time Regan has won an individual title at the NEC Championships, having captured first in the 200 fly as a freshman in 2011-12 for the first individual championship in the program's history.
Regan is the first Mount swimmer to post a sub-56 seconds 100 fly time. The previous school record in the event of 56.06 was set by Courtney Griffith at the 2011 NEC Championships. Regan qualified for Friday's final after posting the fifth-best qualifying time of 56.69 in the preliminary round earlier in the day.
Fournier and Bonson turned in record-setting performances in consecutive races in the 400 IM finals. Bonson, who held the school record of 4:43.78 entering Friday, won the B finals in the event in 4:40.96. Fournier followed in the A finals with a 4:37.47 finish to earn fifth overall and set the new program standard.
The Mount's other competitor in the 400 IM finals, Allison Baker, set a new personal best in 4:55.76, good for seventh in the B finals.
In the final event on the day, the 400 medley relay, the Mount toppled another school record with the team of Amanda Moore (back), Fournier (breast), Regan (fly) and Mollie Walsh (free). Capturing fifth place by clocking in at 3:54.54, the squad bested the time of 3:56.49 set by the same four at this season's Radford Invitational.
Individually, Fournier and Moore finished in fourth and fifth, respectively, in the B finals for the 200 free. Fournier cut nearly two seconds off her time from the prelims to finish in 1:54.92 in the finals, while Moore was not far behind in 1:55.40.
In the 100 fly, Walsh took 16th in the prelims in 59.54 to earn the final spot in the B finals. Following up in the B finals, Walsh placed eighth (1:00.95).
Anne Thelen's 14th place time of 1:11.20 in the prelims of the 100 breast earned her a place in the B finals where she took sixth in 1:10.64.
Seeded seventh going into the B finals for the 100 backstroke, freshman Morgan Runk tied for fourth in the race in 1:00.15 after a time of 1:01.28 in the prelims.
Wagner leads for the third day in a row with 562 points, followed by Bryant in second with 431.5 and Saint Francis U in third with 371. Central Connecticut is one slot ahead of the Mount with 368 points, while the Mount leads Sacred Heart and St. Francis Brooklyn.
