Box Score Norfolk, Va. (December 29, 2014)—Mount St. Mary's dropped its final non-conference game of the season, 69-35, at Old Dominion on Monday night. Andrew Smeathers paced the Mountaineers with 12 points and seven rebounds in the game.
Smeathers went 3-of-8 from the floor while hitting all four of his free throw attempts for his 12-point effort. Khalid Nwandu added seven points with Taylor Danaher collecting a team-high eight rebounds in the loss.
Javonte Douglas led ODU (11-1) with 16 points and nine boards while Richard Ross chipped in 14 points on 7-of-7 shooting.
The Mountaineers struggled from the field, shooting 11-of-50 (22.0 percent) overall and just 4-of-27 (14.8 percent) in the second half. Old Dominion shot 42.4 percent and held a 48-to-36 edge on the boards.
Smeathers hit a three-pointer in the opening minute to give the Mount a 3-2 advantage, but Old Dominion took control of the game from there. The Monarchs scored the next 11 points for a 13-3 advantage. After a Chris Martin jumper, Old Dominion scored nine in a row to push the advantage to 22-5.
Smeathers added another three with Byron Ashe connecting on a pair of free throws to make it 22-10, but the Monarchs were able to extend the lead to as many as 25 points in the half before taking a 42-19 advantage to the locker room.
The Mount (4-7) connected on 7-of-23 (.304) from the floor and 2-of-13 (.154) from three-point range in the first half. Old Dominion hit 17-of-31 (.548) from the field and held a 21-to-12 edge on the boards in the half.
Mount St. Mary's opens Northeast Conference play on Saturday, January 3, with a 4:00 p.m. at Robert Morris in a rematch of last year's NEC Championship game. The Mount won that game, 88-71, to capture the school's fourth bid to the NCAA Tournament.
