Box Score Tucson, Ariz. (November 14, 2014)—No. 2 Arizona pulled away over the final 10 minutes to down Mount St. Mary's, 78-55, on Friday night in the season opener. Kristijan Krajina paced the Mountaineers with 13 points while Byron Ashe added 12 points and four rebounds.
The Mount (0-1) was right in the game midway through the second half. Krajina's three-pointer and a Chris Martin pull-up jumper cut the deficit to 47-38 with 14:21 remaining. After a 4-0 run by Arizona, the Mount rattled off the next six points to make it 51-44.
Byron Ashe hit a pair of free throws, Gregory Graves added another free throw, and Will Miller capped the spurt with a triple from the left wing with 11:08 left.
The Wildcats (1-0) responded to the Mount surge with the next 12 points of the game to take their biggest lead at 63-44. T.J. McConnell sparked the streak with four straight points.
The Mount shot 38.5 percent from the floor while hitting 7-of-21 (.333) from three-point range. Arizona held a 35-to-28 edge on the boards and scored 27 points off 16 Mountaineer turnovers.
Taylor Danaher chipped in nine points in the loss while Gregory Graves pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
Arizona was led by Brandon Ashley's 21 points while Kaleb Tarczewski added a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. Arizona shot 57.4 percent overall.
After falling behind 11-4 early in the first half, the Mount responded with a 10-3 run to even the score at 14-14. Danaher and Ashe each hit three-pointers with a Danaher jumper capping the run.
Later in the half, the Mount again used a quick scoring run to cut the deficit to three points. Miller drained a three-pointer off a baseline inbounds play while Ashe converted a pretty drive to the basket to cut the Arizona lead to 28-25 with 3:21 left in the opening half, forcing a Wildcat timeout. Arizona responded, however, by scoring the final 12 points of the half to take a 15-point lead.
