Box Score 2 Hamden, Conn. (April 7, 2013) -- The Mount softball team could not overcome big innings for Quinnipiac as the Mountaineers dropped both games of Sunday's doubleheader by scores of 13-5 and 7-4. Rachel Gavigan and Erin Leddy both picked up three hits over the course of the two games for Mount St. Mary's.
The Mount (10-22, 2-8 NEC) was forced to play from behind in game one after the Bobcats (9-23, 3-3 NEC) batted around the order and put up six runs in the bottom of the first inning.
With four runs on six hits in the top of the second, the Mount was able to trim the Bobcats' lead to 6-4. Rachel Teti singled home Cat Clifford, who led off with a walk, and a QU error in the field allowed Leddy to score as well. Two batters later with runners on second and third, Marisa Mayes and Gavigan came through with back-to-back RBI singles to score the Mount's third and fourth runs.
Quinnipiac loaded the bases in the fourth and scored on a sacrifice fly for a 7-4 lead.
The Mount responded with a run of its own in the fifth when pinch runner Lindsey Ruhle trotted home from third on Liz Christiansen's RBI single up the middle.
The Bobcats closed the door in game one with two runs in the fifth and a grand slam by Alex Alba in the bottom of the sixth for a 13-5 win. Quinnipiac outhit the Mount, 13-9, in game one as Sydney Robey pitched all six innings for the win. The Mount's starter, Hayley Stankan, allowed seven runs on five hits while striking out one in the loss.
Game two looked promising for the Mount with three runs in the opening frame on an RBI double by Clifford and a wild pitch to plate Christiansen. Three batters later, Mayes singled through the infield for the third run of the inning.
The lead was short lived, however, with Bridget Figmic hitting a solo home run in the second and Jordan Paolucci knocking a three-run homer the next inning for a 4-3 Bobcat edge.
The Mount used opportunistic base running as Alexa Tuck scored on a passed ball in the fifth to even the score at 4-4.
In the bottom of the sixth, Quinnipiac recorded one hit and was aided by two Mount errors to score three runs for a 7-4 lead. Hannah Lindsley made the lead stand up and finished her complete game with eight strikeouts. Nicole Pagano allowed three runs, none of which were earned, in 1.2 innings of work to take the loss.
The Mount will host George Washington at Our Lady of the Meadows Field on Tuesday, April 9, for a doubleheader at 3:00 p.m.
