Box Score 2 Brooklyn, N.Y. (April 28, 2013) -- Bre Lohman's sixth inning grand slam carried the Mount softball team to a 4-2 victory in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader at LIU Brooklyn as the Mountaineers split the twinbill to wrap up the season. The Blackbirds managed a 5-0 victory in game two.
The Mount (16-30, 7-13 NEC) concludes the 2013 campaign with three wins in the final four games.
LIU Brooklyn (17-35, 13-7 NEC) took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in game one on Lauren Morizi's single to left field to plate Whitney West who had tripled earlier in the frame.
The Mount threatened to even the score at 1-1 in the third and fifth innings, but stranded runners on third base on both occasions.
The Mount's big sixth inning began with Cat Clifford's one-out single to right field. Erin Leddy followed with a walk and Kelly Hickman reached on an error to load the bases. Lohman successfully cleared the bases with her fourth home run of the season to give the Mount a 4-1 lead.
In the home half of the sixth, the Blackbirds scored one run on Nicole Archer's RBI groundout to score Morizi, who began the frame with a double. The Mount kept LIU off the scoreboard the rest of the way for a 4-2 victory.
Junior pitcher Nicole Pagano scattered five hits while striking out four and allowing two earned runs in a complete game to earn her 14th win of the season and 38th of her career. The 14 victories are tied for the most in single-season history, while 38 moves her to a tie for second place in the Mount's history.
Clifford, Lohman and Alexa Tuck recorded the Mount's three hits as the offense took advantage of three LIU Brooklyn errors in the field.
The Blackbirds' game one starter, Cassie Vondrak, also pitched a complete game with four earned runs on three hits and three walks to take the loss.
In the second game of the day, Hickman and Liz Christiansen both singled in their final collegiate games as the Mount was outhit, 7-2, in a 5-0 defeat.
All five of LIU's runs were scored in the second inning. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases before Celinna Cosio hit a sacrifice fly to right field for a 1-0 LIU lead. Doubles off the bat of Madison Green and Karina Cervantes for one RBI apiece and West's infield single to score two runners gave LIU a 5-0 lead.
The five runs turned out to be enough support for LIU's starting pitcher Archer, who struck out eight in a complete game two-hit shutout.
For the Mount, Danni Cummings gave up five runs on seven hits while striking out two in four innings before Pagano pitched the final two innings.
NOTES: Sunday's doubleheader marked the final games in Mount uniforms for Liz Christiansen, Kristen Collins, Kelly Hickman, Erin Leddy, Bre Lohman and Alexa Tuck... Christiansen finishes her career as the program's all-time leader in home runs with 26 and RBIs with 111. She also is second for walks (72) and total bases (244) and fifth for hits (141) and doubles (28)... Leddy is fourth in all-time walks (60) and sixth in runs scored (83).
