Box Score 2 Emmitsburg, Md. (April 14, 2013) -- The Mount St. Mary's softball team used back-to-back home runs by Cat Clifford and Erin Leddy to win game one on Sunday by a 5-2 final against Saint Francis U as the Mount split a Northeast Conference doubleheader at Our Lady of the Meadows Field. The Red Flash won the second game, 4-1.
Nicole Pagano put together another strong pitching performance in game one with eight strikeouts while allowing two runs on seven hits for the Mount (12-26, 4-10 NEC).
Both teams tallied runs in the second inning in game one with the Red Flash (19-17, 2-4 NEC) scoring on an RBI single by Maggie Creciun. The Mount evened the score in the home half of the inning on Holly Buckel's RBI double to right center to plate Leddy, who led off the frame with a single.
The score remained 1-1 until the bottom of the fifth when Clifford knocked her team-leading eighth home run to left field with two runners on for a 4-1 edge. Three pitches later, Leddy cleared the fence in left field to make it a 5-1 Mount lead.
The Red Flash managed to get one run back in the top of the sixth on Chelsea Rex's single down the line in left field to cut the deficit to 5-2. Pagano retired five of the next six batters she faced to get out of the jam in the sixth and shut down SFU in the seventh for her 10th win of the season.
Ketarah Devries took the loss for Saint Francis with five earned runs on seven hits. Leddy and Buckel both recorded two hits for the Mount in game one, while Karlie Miller also had two hits for the visitors.
In game two, the Red Flash manufactured a run in the top of the first en route to outhitting the Mount 11-6 in a 4-1 victory. Brianna Garcia led off with an infield single and took second on a sacrifice bunt from Taylor Parsons before Miller's RBI single to left put the Mount in an early 1-0 hole.
The Mountaineers were able to tie the score at 1-1 on Liz Christiansen's walk after loading the bases on a Marisa Mayes' single followed by a Red Flash error and Megan Baker's walk.
With two outs and a runner on second base in the top of the fifth, SFU received back-to-back RBI singles from Davina Kachnovitz and Taylor Darneille for a 3-1 advantage. The Red Flash tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh on Miller's sacrifice fly to center to plate Consentino, who led off with a triple.
Rex, SFU's starter in game two, shut down the Mount with her third 1-2-3 inning of the game in the seventh. Rex gave up one run on six hits in seven innings as Danni Cummings allowed four runs on 11 hits for the Mount.
The Mount will play another home doubleheader against in-state rival Morgan State in non-conference action on Wednesday, April 17, beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Our Lady of the Meadows Field.
