Mount St. Mary's Softball Drops Doubleheader at Robert Morris

Moon Township, Pa. (March 29, 2013)-- The Mount softball team dropped a pair of Northeast Conference games at Robert Morris on Friday, falling by scores of 5-0 and 2-1. 

Robert Morris' Nicole Sleith tossed a no-hitter in game one of the doubleheader, and the Colonials (14-9, 2-0 NEC) used runs in the second and sixth innings to beat the Mount (8-17, 2-4 NEC) by a 2-1 final in the nightcap. 

Trailing 1-0 in game two, the Mount tied up the score at 1-1 in the top of the fourth. Rachel Gavigan reached on a fielder's choice then moved to second on Liz Christiansen's second walk of the game. Erin Leddy was able to single to right field to plate Gavigan to even the score. 

Robert Morris scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth when Tess Apke led off with a single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch. Apke scored from third when the next batter, Haileigh Stocks, knocked a base hit up the middle. 

Kendra Hayward picked up the first multi-hit game of her career with a bunt single in the fifth and an infield single her next time up in the seventh.  

Hayley Stankan pitched all six innings for the Mount, giving up just three hits and one earned run to take the loss. Sleith worked three innings in relief for the Colonials to take the win.  

Robert Morris gave Sleith all of the run support she needed in game one with two runs in the first inning followed by two more in the third and one in the fifth. 

The Mount's starter in game one, Nicole Pagano, went three innings with four runs on four hits. Danni Cummings pitched the final three, allowing one run on four hits. 

The Colonials recorded eight hits in the first game with three coming off the bat of leadoff hitter Ashley Gerhart. 

The Mount will return to Our Lady of the Meadows Field tomorrow for a doubleheader against Canisius with the first pitch slated for noon.
