Radford, Va. (November 21, 2013) – With the first day of the Radford Invitational in the books, the Mount women's swimming team already has four individual wins to its credit in the five finals on Thursday. For the second meet in a row, sophomore Haley Fournier broke a school record, while the 400 medley relay team also took down a program record.
As a team, the Mount is in second place with 214 points.
Fournier, the reigning Northeast Conference Swimmer of the Week, won the finals of the 500 free with a school record time of 4:59.84. The previous best time in Mount history was 5:00.99 by teammate Erin Regan at last season's Northeast Conference Championships.
The sophomore had qualified for the finals by taking second in the prelims in 5:07.49 earlier in the day. Fournier broke the school record for the 200 breaststroke last time out in Washington, D.C.
The other school record that fell on the day was in the 400 medley relay, where Fournier teamed up with Regan, Amanda Moore and Mollie Walsh for a winning time of 3:56.49. Regan was a member of the squad that previously held the record of 3:59.11 along with Courtney Griffith, Anne Thelen and Cat Coppler.
In the other relay on the day, the 200 free relay, the Mount's team comprised of Moore, Coppler, Walsh and Regan beat the second-place team from Campbell by less than a second with a time of 1:37.41. The time is good for fourth in school history.
Walsh was also an individual winner on the day in the 50 free in 24.40. She made it through to the finals with the second-best time of the day in the 50 free prelims in 24.72.
On an individual level, Regan finished third in the finals of the 50 free (24.78) and fourth in the 500 free (5:09.14).
After one day, Campbell leads the team competition with 326, followed by the Mount with 214 and Radford in third with 159 points. UNC Asheville, Millersville and North Carolina A&T round out the field through five events.
The meet continues tomorrow and concludes on Saturday, Nov. 23.
