Monmouth Sweeps Twinbill With Softball

WEST LONG BRACH, N.J. – Monmouth swept a Northeast Conference (NEC) softball doubleheader on Saturday. The Hawks rallied to take the opener 2-1 in eight innings and then won the nightcap, 7-2.

Erin Leddy (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) paced the Mount (15-32, 6-10 NEC) paced the Mount with three hits, a run scored and an RBI. Liz Christiansen (Etters, Pa./Red Land) added two hits and an RBI while Maria Santiago (Buena, N.J./Buena Regional) and Cat Clifford (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) each added two hits on the afternoon.

Kayleena Flores fueled Monmouth with three hits, three runs scored and two RBIs while Christine Scherr added three hits, two runs scored and two RBIs in the two games.

Mount St. Mary's was one out away from recording the win in the opener, but Colleen Kelly plated the tying run with two outs in the seventh to send the game to extra innings. An error opened the eighth for the Hawks and Monmouth capitalized with a Katie Schumacher RBI single with one out to earn the 2-1 victory.

The Mount jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the fifth after Chloe Mizianty (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) singled and touched home on a Christiansen's RBI single.

Nicole Pagano (Berlin, N.J./St. Joseph) took the loss in the opener after allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with six strikeouts in 7.1 innings pitched.

In the nightcap, Monmouth scored the first five runs of the game en route to a 7-2 victory.

Vanessa Cardoza hit a sacrifice fly in the first to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead before Kate Kumza homered to lead off the second. Flores notched a two-run single up the middle in the third and Tish Derer singled home a run in the fourth.

The Mountaineers got on the scoreboard in the fifth with two runs to trim the margin to 5-2. Alexa Tuck (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) doubled to left center and scored on Leddy's RBI triple. Leddy then scored on an error.

The Hawks added two runs in the fifth on RBIs by Chelsea Paprocki and Derer.

After tossing 11-straight shutout innings, Cummings pitched the third three innings of the nightcap and took the loss. Amanda Sadowl (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) tossed the final three innings.

Mount St. Mary's returns to Our Lady of the Meadows Field to host Wagner on Sunday. Game time is 12 p.m. In between games, the Mount will honor seniors Christiansen, Mizianty, Sadowl and Taylor Beebe (Olympia, Wash./Capital).
